We had a long battle figuring out a problem with toddler my son's digestion
and this saw us visit a succession of specialists. What finally pegged the
problem as a dairy & soy allergy was the ELISA allergy test. He'd seen
allergists who'd done the skin sensitivity test and didn't indicate anything
out of the ordinary. Eventually an ND (Dramow) recommended this test -
specifically from US Biotek Labs. Apparently the reliability of the test is
highly dependant on the way the sample is processed and he'd found this lab
to be consistently accurate. Getting these two things out of his diet
cleared up his problems like magic.

PS yeah - removing dairy + soy together knocks out a lot of foods and
specifically calcium sources - but there are plenty of alternatives out
there in this day and age. Fortified rice milk isn't at all bad.

Subject: RE: [OBRA Chat] Anyone allergic to wheat/dairy?

I have allergies that affected my health so bad it forced me out of cycling
for 2 years.
For dairy products, the main suspect chemical that can complicate
allergies is casein. There is also a theory that lactose can complicate
allergies because your body works so hard to break that sugar down it
stresses your body's defense mechanisms to foreign invaders, including
things that can give allergic reactions. Milk protein is also supposed
to be a very hard 'thing' for the body to break down.
Supposively, the allergy test you need to request from an allergist to
get a true indication of you are allergy to diary is a ELSIA/ACT test.
But I am sure Mike Murray can help out on this.

Just a suggestion. Good luck.

Hello:
I am really suspecting that I am allergic to wheat and dairy and
considering eliminating them from my diet.
In my 5 years of trying to be a racing cyclist I have lived on bread,
pasta, yogurt, and cheese in addition to
veggies and fruits. I was wondering if any racers out there who
eliminated dairy and wheat can offer any
diet ideas for replacing these with other 'energy foods'.
Regards,
Keith

I would agree with that. THere are plenty of grains you can eat if
allergic to wheat but it's a lot of hassle to go through if you don't
need to. And athletes need a lot of calcium in their diet, another
thing you don't want to eliminate without good reason. There are tests
that can be done to determine many food allergies. An MD and/or an ND
can help you with this. Jason Barker, ND(naturopathic doctor) works
with us at Healthmax and is especially interested in working with
athletes, as am I. (Keith is already a pt with us--give a call, Keith.)
