Volunteers Still Needed for Eugene Celebration Cycling Classic

We are still in need of volunteers to help make the Eugene Celebration

Cycling Classic a success. Im trying again to see if people can help

out, and spread the word that volunteer positions are still open for the

race. We are trying in Eugene to get local volunteers too, there will

be an ad running in local newspapers asking for volunteers.



Please feel free to forward this email to people that might be

interested.



Specifically we are in need of Corner marshals and Drivers of Lead and

Follow(service) Vehicles (we provide the cars, EMAIL me for more

details)



Details of volunteer positions are listed below. Please note that these

positions are all filled:

8/15/01, Saturday positions filled are: finish monitor, registration and

set-up.

8/16/01, Sunday positions filled are: finish monitor and registration

Shifts run for approx. 3hrs, on both days of the cycling classic.

Saturday, Sept. 15th at Cottage Grove Lake and Sunday Sept. 16th, at

Lorane Valley/Twin Oaks. (See directions)



Volunteers for the Cycling Classic will receive great perks this year

since it is associated with the citywide festival. Eugene Celebration

volunteers receive:

- A Celebration Button, available when you check in for your shift, good

for admission to the Eugene Celebration for the entire weekend! (can be

arranged to be given to you prior to your volunteer work.)

- All volunteers receive a special 2001 Celebration T-shirt.

- Automatic entry into our volunteer raffle where you can win some great

prizes!

- Best seat in the house for some great racing.

- Clearly defined job descriptions, so you know exactly when you are

working the event



Volunteer Check in will be on race site, near the registration area.

Eugene Celebration Cycling Classic 2001





Corner Marshal Info:

Positions available for Cottage Grove, 9/15/01: 10



Position Times, 9/15/01:

9:30 - 12:30 (during the pro/1/2, Cat. 3 and women's road races)



12:00 - 3:30 (during the Masters 35+, Cat. 4/5, Juniors road races)



3:00 - 5:00 (during the time trial, all categories)





Positions available for TwinOaks/Lorane Valley, 9/16/01: 20



Position Times:

9:30 - 12:30 (during the pro/1/2, Cat. 3 and women's road races)



12:00 - 3:30 (during the Masters 35+ and Cat. 4/5 road races)







Being assertive yet sensibly controlling traffic is very important as a

corner marshal. Course marshals keep the race safe for the cyclists and

the race caravan by keeping cars and pedestrians off the course, while

keeping the racers on it. Marshals also help educate the crowd and

promote enthusiasm among the spectators. Your duties may include

alerting cyclists of caution areas or turns; crowd control; traffic

control; or acting as a pep leader. Specifically would include stopping

and slowing traffic on roadways going into racecourse when racers are

passing through. Also would include keeping intersection clear of

traffic, so congestion doesn't happen.



Be available for questions about the race, route, who to contact and

public concern.

Drive a lead or follow (service/support) vehicle in the race caravan.

Help make a safe, contained race by driving you own vehicle or a

supplied vehicle (6 available for use). Duties will include

communicating on two-way radio, like listening for direction from race

officials, communicating with corner marshals. Some vehicles will be

support or service vehicles, which will follow race, may require

carrying wheels. Drivers will need to be approved though race director.

Help the traffic flow efficiently into the parking areas and aid in

cutting down congestion in these areas. Duties will include directing

cars to correct parking places, directing people to registration area,

and answering non racer questions (general race, venue, and course

questions). Other duties will include coordinating and communicating

with race staff and finish line monitors.

Venue and Course set up:



Positions available for TwinOaks/Lorane Valley, 9/16/01: 2

Position Times:

7:30 - 10:00



Unloading race and finish line equipment, setting up tents, placing road

signs and other course signage are the main duties. Set up crew will

coordinate with race staff and course manager to accomplish this.

Directions to race sites:



Cottage Grove, Cottage Grove Lake - Lakeside Parking Area, 8/15/01:

Directions: From Eugene, head south on I-5 to exit 172 (Cottage Grove

Lake). Exit 172 is the 2nd Cottage Grove exit. NOTE: If you miss it,

you will have to travel south approx. 10miles to another exit. Turn left

onto S 6th st. S 6th st. becomes London Rd. and precede approx. 5

miles. Follow the signs to the parking area called Lakeside (north end

of lake). Allow approx. 30 minutes travel time from Eugene.



Twin Oaks Elementary School, 85916 Bailey Hill Rd. 8/16/01:

Directions: FROM I-5 NORTH: Take the exit, exit number 195B, towards

Santa Clara/Florence. Merge onto Beltline Hwy W. Beltline Hwy W becomes

Beltline Rd. Turn left onto West 11th. Then, turn right onto S.

Bertelsen Rd.

Bertelsen becomes Bailey Hill Rd. FROM 1-5 SOUTH; Take the I-105 W, exit

194B, towards Eugene. Take the OR-99 N exit towards W. Eugene/Florence.

Merge onto W 6TH Ave. Turn left onto Garfield St. Turn right onto W

11TH Ave. Turn right left onto S. Bertelsen Rd, Bertelsen becomes Bailey

Hill Rd. Allow approx. 20 minutes travel from Eugene.
