Wicks and Pennington Roll to Convincing Victories in the
Second Round of the River City Bicycles Cyclo-Cross Crusade Series
Portland, Ore., October 16, 2001 - Barry Wicks (Bike Gallery) and Alice
Pennington (Gentle Lovers) earned well-deserved victories in the second
round of the River City Bicycles Cyclo-Cross Crusade held October 14 in
Portland's Pier Park. By winning the second round, both riders vaulted
into the lead in the eight-race series with $10,000 in prize money on
the line.
Sunny skies greeted the more than 300 competitors following a light,
early morning shower that firmed up the ground to ensure fast
conditions. Set under a scenic stand of 150-feet tall fir trees in
North Portland, the three-kilometer Pier Park course offers two distinct
personalities. The first half is flat and fast with only a single pair
of barriers in the opening one-and-a-half kilometers. The second half
criss-crosses a deep gully six times so racers alternately plummet down
30-plus mile per hour descents and are then forced to either climb out
of the saddle or shoulder their bikes to make back to the top. The most
dreaded section is a punishing four-story run-up.
The strong Category A Men's field sprinted away from the start line for
its seven-lap race with the field stringing out in the opening minutes.
By the time the lead riders encountered the first run-up, Wicks was
showing he was the man to beat as he went on to win the first lap prime
of a bottle of Chianti wine. His teammate Shannon Skerritt (Bike
Gallery) was next in line leading a larger group of pursuers.
Wicks found the fast Pier Park course to his liking, consistently
ticking off laps at an average speed of more than 16 miles per hour. He
used his power on the flat sections and agile bike handling - including
bunnyhopping some of the barriers - to continue opening up the gap over
Skerritt.
The race for third stayed close throughout the event as Doug Olerenshaw
(Gentle Lovers), Jamal Hahn (Northern), Travis Hunt (Mountain View
Cycle) and Team S & M's Jon Myers and Derl Miller all pushed hard. This
pack rode aggressively with constant attacking on the front to try and
pull away..
At the finish, Wicks put an exclamation point on his race by hopping the
last set of barriers just 30 meters before picking up the win. Skerritt
followed one minute later after struggling with cramps over the final
kilometers. On the last lap, Ollerenshaw carried his great form from
the road season onto the dirt to score third, followed in by Hahn,
Myers, Miller and Hunt.
The Women's race saw Pennington take the lead early and she never looked
back over the next six laps. This season has marked the emergence of
Pennington as a rider to watch on the national scene as she took home a
silver medal from the National Under-23 Road Race and a bronze medal
from the Collegiate National Road Race.
Rhonda Mazza (Team S & M) and Naomi Gollogly were in pursuit and stayed
together for the opening three laps as they tried to follow Pennington.
After the halfway mark, Mazza edged away as the lead women racers began
lapping the Category B Men's field.
After the order of the women's race was established, the drama turned to
a unique promoter's prime that illustrates why this series is popular
among regional racers. Each week series co-promoter Russ Humberston,
Jr. (Safeway/Saturn of Beaverton), who races in the Men's Category B
field which leaves a two minutes ahead of the women, offers $20 to any
woman that passes him during the race. As Pennington closed in,
Humberston had a mechanical and he stopped in the pits which seemingly
handed her the prize. However, the battle of the sexes was far from
over as Humberston recovered to chase Pennington down and pass her to
halve her prime.
Pennington was unfazed as she cruised in to the finishing chute for an
impressive win. Mazza held station in second followed home by Gollogly
in third. Leah Toffolon (Bike Gallery) and Emily Miazga (Hutch's)
completed the top five.
Round three of the River City Bicycles Cyclo-Cross Crusade takes
cyclists to familiar surroundings October 21 as the series heads to
Portland International Raceway. This venue hosts weekly road races
throughout the spring and summer, but the rain in the forecast could
turn the less familiar cyclo-cross course into an inhospitable and muddy
test of stamina.
