Tonkin Outduels Wicks for Win and Series Title;
Mazza Stamps Authority with Third Consecutive Victory
In Final Round of the River City Bicycles Cyclo-Cross Crusade Series

Portland, Ore., December 2, 2001 - As the curtain came down on the
2001 River City Bicycles Cyclo-Cross Crusade Series, the two stars of the
year showed emphatically why their names are going to be engraved on "the
world's coolest trophy." Eric Tonkin (Kona/Voicestream Wireless) and Rhonda
Mazza (Team S & M) repeated their wins from the last round and each picked
up the series title as well, as the title of Oregon State Cyclo-Cross
Champion, on December 2 at the stunning King Estate Winery in Eugene, Ore.
Looking the part of a French chateau, the King Estate Vineyard made an
elegant setting for the final round of the $10,000 Cyclo-Cross Crusade,
which doubled as the Oregon State Cyclo-Cross Championship event. The
3.3-kilometer course wound through the vineyards set on a hillside in the
foothills of the Cascade Mountain range. With the start/finish line in the
parking area of the hilltop winery, the racers had to negotiate a tricky
serpentine, off-camber descent at the beginning of the lap and then finish
by running up a steep embankment.
The weather played a significant role as well. Although the races
were run under mostly sunny skies, the previous week had seen more than four
inches of rain soak the region leaving the ground saturated. The resulting
mud forced riders to apply power while using a delicate touch so as not to
lose traction. The gummy muck was no friend to drivetrains, brakes and
cleats, either.
The Category A Men's field had all of the key protagonists from the
last two months present and accounted for. Tonkin and Bike Gallery
teammates Barry Wicks and Shannon Skerritt were the favorites for the title.
With the series formula allowing a rider to drop two of the eight races, and
this final round counting as double points, the mathematics were simple: if
Tonkin or Wicks won, they would win the series title; Skerritt needed to win
and have Wicks finish no higher than third in order to come out on top.
During the first of six laps, the leading trio of Tonkin, Wicks and
Skerritt had already distanced themselves from the hard-chasing Derl Miller
(Team S & M). The next time through the finish area, it was a two-man race
between Tonkin and Wicks as Skerritt had dropped 10 seconds back.
For the next several laps, the two leaders continued to pull away as
they marked each other's every move. Wicks appeared to have a slight
advantage because Tonkin could not carry his bicycle due to an injured
shoulder. The tension was building to see who would come out on top.
As Wicks and Tonkin approached an asphalt climb one kilometer from the
finish, they slowed to a near standstill to try and force the other to lead
out. Wicks ended up in front, but then Tonkin accelerated past. As the
road steepened, Tonkin put in a savage, out-of-the-saddle attack that
separated him from Wicks. The Kona/Voicestream Wireless rider put in a
maximum effort in the final run-up as hundreds of fans cheered wildly.
Tonkin gassed it all the way to the line and held a comfortable five-second
winning margin as he raised one arm to salute the crowd.
For Tonkin, it was a day of "threes." He took his third win of the
year at King Estate Winery to match Wicks' total. These two competitors
were very evenly matched all season long and animated one of the closest
fought battles for the series championship in its 10-year history. Tonkin
also won his third consecutive River City Bicycles Cyclo-Cross Crusade
series and Oregon State Cyclo-Cross Championship. However, Wicks put Tonkin
and the rest of the field on notice for 2002. Skerritt, Miller and Zac
Houghton (Preston Velo) rounded out the top five for the series.
For the Category A Women, Mazza was the clear favorite having
dominated the last two rounds at Estacada and Alpenrose. She also was
trying to dispel her string of bridesmaid finishes for the series having
placed second in 1999 and 2000.
The start was straightforward as the field darted toward the first
descent only 200 meters after the start. Karen Kenlen (Sunnyside Sports)
and Naomi Gollogly (Bike Gallery) were on the front after the first of three
laps. Mazza trailed in third after crashing hard on the initial descent,
and then had trouble shifting due to the thick mud built-up on her rear
derailleur.
Any optimism Mazza's rivals may have held, however, was soon dispelled
as she overcame her mechanical challenges and powered away during the middle
circuit. Kenlen was 15 seconds back after the second lap pursued by Alice
Pennington (Bike Gallery).
Mazza continued to open the gap and crossed the finish line with a
beaming smile knowing she had finally claimed the top prize in the series
that earned her a new 2001 Bianchi cyclo-cross bicycle (valued at $1,300).
Kenlen kept motoring for second ahead of Bike Gallery trio of Pennington,
Leah Toffolon and Gollogly.
In addition to the Category A men and women, a total of seven
additional competitors earned the title of Oregon State Cyclo-Cross
Champion. The prestigious list includes: Mark King (Sunnyside Sports),
Master Men 35+; Michael Sylvester (Bike Gallery), Master Men 45+; Kevin
Hulick (Gentle Lovers), Category B Men; Patrick Hultgren, Beginner Men; Andy
Brooks (Bike Kraft), Juniors; Suzanne King, Master Women 35+; and Kori Kunz
(Paradise Homes), Category B Women.
The $10,000 River City Bicycles Cyclo-Cross Crusade celebrated its
most successful season as it emerged as one of the top-drawing series in the
United States. Following the day's racing, several hundred competitors,
organizers, volunteers and their families enjoyed a raucous awards ceremony.
In addition to the over $10,000 in cash and prizes, over $5,000 in prizes
was raffled to all who attended.
