Get Involved! Now Recruiting Volunteers for Eugene Celebration Cycling Classic!



The Eugene Celebration is now recruiting volunteers for the cycling classic (Sept 21-22). This

year's event has some new changes, which include new courses for all events, including a new

downtown course. Get involved and be part of the event as a volunteer. Large events like these can't

happen without the support of dedicated volunteers. We are very appreciative of the volunteer work

that happens at this event. So if your are interested in volunteering at the 20th Anniversary Eugene

Celebration, please read through the job descriptions, and time/position and let us know.



Volunteers for the Cycling Classic will receive a great volunteer package:

- A Celebration Button, available when you check in for your shift, good for admission to the Eugene

Celebration for the entire weekend!

- All volunteers receive a special 2002 Eugene Celebration T-shirt.

- Automatic entry into our volunteer raffle where you can win some great prizes!

- Best seat in the house for some great racing.

- Clearly defined job descriptions, so you know exactly when you are working the event



Volunteer Job Descriptions/Positions Available:

For people that I have talked with before, please just remind me and if I have talked especially

with you about a position then please choose. If your new to this, don't worry you will be oriented

on race day.



Shifts run for approx. 3hrs, on both days of the cycling classic. Saturday, Sept. 21st at Crow and

Sunday Sept. 22nd, in Downtown Eugene/Skinner Butte Park. (See directions) Volunteer Check in will

be on race site, near the registration areas.

Corner/Course Marshal Info:

Being assertive yet sensibly controlling traffic is very important as a corner marshal. Course

marshals keep the race safe for the cyclists and the race caravan by keeping cars and pedestrians

off the course, while keeping the racers on it. Marshals also help educate the crowd and promote

enthusiasm among the spectators. Your duties may include alerting cyclists of caution areas or

turns; crowd control; traffic control; or acting as a pep leader. Also would include stopping and

slowing traffic on roadways going into racecourse when racers are passing through. Also would

include keeping intersection clear of traffic, so congestion doesn't happen. You may need to be

available for questions about the race, route, who to contact and public concern during the event.

You will be provided with maps and race details for reference.

Finish Line Monitor:

Keep finish line area clear of racers, cars and help flow of traffic in this congested area. Duties

will include stopping traffic when racers are finishing, making sure finish line is clear, keeping

spectators on right side of crowd control barriers. Also duties will include clearing finish line of

racers after finish to allow for traffic to flow. Ensuring that the finish line barricades, crowd

control fencing and banners have not moved into roadway or fallen into roadway is another duty.

Caravan Driver:

Drive a lead or follow (service/support) vehicle in the race caravan. Help make a safe, contained

race by driving you own vehicle or a supplied vehicle. Duties will include communicating on two-way

radio, for example listening for direction from race officials, communicating with corner marshals.

Some vehicles will be support or service vehicles, which will follow race, may require carrying

wheels. Drivers will need to be approved through race director.

Parking Attendant:

Help the traffic flow efficiently into the parking areas and aid in cutting down congestion in these

areas. Duties will include directing cars to correct parking places, directing people to

registration area, and answering non racer questions (general race, venue, and course questions).

Other duties will include coordinating and communicating with race staff and finish line monitors.

Registration:

Signing up, taking forms and registering racers is the main duty. Communicating with cash handler,

registration official, filing and data entry are other duties. Answering questions and directing

people will also be another task.

Venue and Course SET up:

Unloading race and finish line equipment, setting up tents, placing road signs and other course

signage are the main duties. Set up crew will coordinate with race staff and course manager to

accomplish this.

Venue and Course CLEAN up:

Loading up race and finish line equipment, cleaning up registration and parking areas, and picking

up race course signs/equipment are main duties. Clean up crew will coordinate with race staff and

course manager to accomplish this.

Mechanics/Service Support:

Duties will include assisting racers before races with minor repairs, and providing support/service

to racers on the race course while riding in support car or in wheel "pit." Mechanics will work

alongside race officials for providing fair support to racers. Mechanics will need to be approved

through race director.

Hosts for Host Housing:

Hosts would just have to allow racers a place to sleep, clean up and possibly cook/prepare food.

Hosts would need to be in Eugene/Springfield area. Hosts could house racers either Friday 20th or

Saturday 21st nights or both. Interested hosts should contact: Richard Sweet, Volunteer Host Housing

Stages 1 and 2 - Crow, Crow High School - 9/21/02:

Volunteer Check-In: High School parking lot, near race registration

Directions: From I-5 North, Take the exit number 195B- towards Santa Clara/Florence. Merge onto

Beltline Hwy W - which becomes Beltline Rd. Turn Right onto W 11TH AVE. Turn Left onto Green Hill

Rd. Stay straight to go onto Crow Rd towards Start/Finish, which is approx 7 m from W 11th/GreenHill

Rd junction. From I-5 South, Take the OR-99 N/OR-126 exit towards W. Eugene/Florence. Merge onto W

6TH AVE/OR-126 W/OR-99 N. Turn Left onto Garfield St/OR-126 W. Turn Right onto W 11TH AVE. Turn

Left onto Green Hill Rd. Stay straight to go onto Crow Rd towards Start/Finish which is approx 7 m

from W 11th/GreenHill Rd junction. From Eugene, Take W 11th, Turn Left onto Green Hill Rd. Stay

straight to go onto Crow Rd towards Start/Finish, which is approx 7 m from W 11th/GreenHill Rd junction.

Allow approx. 35 minutes travel time from Eugene.





Stage 3 - Skinner Butte Park Criterium - Downtown Eugene - 9/22/02

Volunteer Check-In: 3rd and Lincoln, by race registration area

Directions: FROM I-5 NORTH/SOUTH: Take the I-105 W/OR-126 W exit number 194B- towards Eugene.

Merge onto I-105 W. Take the OR-99 S/Jefferson St. exit on the left towards City Center. Keep Left

at the fork in the ramp. Merge onto W 7TH AVE S. Stay straight to go onto W 7TH AVE. Turn Left

onto Washington, Lincoln or Lawrence Streets for parking.
