It's uncanny....
A week or so ago, you're riding sans clothing at PIR and the next week the
fog, rain and cold roll in letting us know it is time for cyclocross.
Enter the first race of the River City Bicycles' Cyclo-Cross Crusade right
on cue.
The first stop of the 2002 'Cross Crusade is at the venerable Alpenrose
Dairy course in SW Portland on Sunday, October 6th, 2002. The top 'cross
racers in the Pacific NW will be on the start line for opening day. Eric
Tonkin (Kona-Kenwood) and Rhonda Mazza (Team S&M) will be hoping to defend
their 2001 titles and stake an early claim to the 2002 title with a win in
round one. Spectators will be looking to Barry "the Hair" Wicks
(Kona-Kenwwod), Shannon Skerrit (Bike Gallery/Trek), John "Stompy" Leonard
(Bike Gallery/Trek), Derl "Blue Collar" Miller (Bike Gallery/Trek) and Jon
"the Mayor" Myers (Team S&M) to challenge for the overall series. The
women's field will be deeper than ever with challenges coming from
nationally ranked MTB racer Alice Pennington (Bike Gallery/Trek), pro roadie
Marjon Marik (River City Bicycles) and the always solid Naomi Gollogly (Bike
Gallery/Trek). Adding to our already deep talent base here in Portland will
be the top racers from Seattle as they come down to challenge in the first
round of the four race "Grail De La Grunge Cup". Expected attendees from
the emerald city are Dale Knapp (Kona-Kenwood), Johnny Sundt (K2), Ann
Grande (Kona-Kenwood) and Jeanette Nussbaum (Kona-Kenwood), among others.
The 2002 'Cross Crusade Series has well over $20,002 of prize money up for
grabs and includes eight races, and two UCI sanctioned events. The 'Cross
Crusade series started 10 years ago as a grass roots series that emphasized
fun and participation. To this day, despite growing to be the largest
'cross series in the nation, we continue to foster that grass-roots feeling.
Prizes and primes, such as 6 packs of beer and quality cycling related
product, are liberally distributed throughout every category at a 'Cross
Crusade Event. This kind of generosity is made possible by the unparalleled
support of our title sponsor River City Bicycles
<http://www.rivercitybicycles.com/> and presenting sponsors Cannondale,
Saturn/RussAuto, MacTarnahan's and Sellwood Cycle Repair.
The festivities get started Sunday at 8:30am with the Red Lizard XC
Footrace. A free Kid's race will then take the stage at 9:15am. Then the
'Cross Crusade series gets kicked off in earnest at 9:30am. A full day of
racing ensues, culminating in the Elite Women's race at 12:45pm and Elite
Men at 2pm. For race details or additional series details, please go to
