Sunday, November 17...
The official's whistle pierce's your ear drum and you instinctively stomp on
your pedals and immediately peg your heart rate on the red line. Body's and
bikes are flying all around jostling for position into the first little drop
and the ensuing sweeping left. You find yourself on a false flat section
that should be rippin' fast but, it is rain soaked and energy sapping. Up
ahead you can see your first obstacle- a double wide set of double barriers.
The barriers are followed by several hundred meters of grass riding, hal of
which is on a side hill which challenges you to pick just the right line.
After this section you have a left hand turn into a gentle descent on the
grass and a quick little turn out onto some pavement. The pavement section
goes down hill with a fast right hand turn at the bottom (think crit!) then
up a little rise into a chicane right before the finish line- it allows you
a little recovery. You cruise past the officials and hop a curb and you are
immediately on the grass again. A tricky little off-camber down and up
tests your bike handling skills again. A short section of flat grass (you
note that it's soggy, muddy grass) with several 100-plus degree turns before
dropping down into the trees. The double track descent is slippery- you
dismount over another set of doubles- run down the hill, across the bridge
and choose your route up the run up (straight ahead is a daunting staircase
which is short and steep. To the left is a traverse trail that is less
steep but a little longer). Trudge up the hill and gather yourself for a
remount. You are greeting with some nice double track through the woods.
Up a little leg-crushing rise onto the soccer field for a short flat section
before dropping back into the woods on more double track. A hard right hand
turn onto a very short section of new single track then out of the woods for
more zigging and zagging off-camber trickery. After a short false-flat
climb on a dirt trail, you disappear into the woods once again on a bumpy
downhill double track section with a sharp 120 degree turn onto gravel road
at the bottom. One more little up and down with a little bit of sand and
you are back on course to do it all again.......

PS- It is not suppose to rain on Sunday but the recent weather has ensured
that this will be the first muddy 'Cross Crusade event of the year! It'll
be a blast.
