Once again hoppin' Hodgert Ranch in Bend was the venue for Cascade Cross #4. The riders were greeted with increasing clouds and wind and decreasing temps throughout the day at the near 5000 foot elevation. A tacky, faster, less technical course was arranged thanks in part to Mom Nature and one barrier (downed tree) was added overnight in the high wind ravaged area. Doc Hodgert and his trusty chainsaw quickly remedied the "bonus barrier".
A LeMans style start and the Beginners, Women and Juniors were off. Team Fuji's Barry "I'm not used to the altitude" Holman took the holeshot and sandbagged his way to a victory in the Beginner 30+ category. He was followed somewhat closely by Belgian Kris Schamp (unattached) and not-so-Belgian Chris Moore (unattached). Steve Basden (Lakeside) followed in fourth place. The Women's race saw River City's Mandy Lozano blast her way around the wooded course to victory. She was followed by Dawn "I don't know how I let him talk me into this" Guildner in second place and the ever-sporting Shanan Whitlach (Lakeside) in third. Once again the Junior's race was dominated by thirteen year old Carson Miller (Capitol Velo) who rode his way into the back of and through some of the names-not-to-be mentioned Beginner men. Adding insult to injury was the fact that Carson's rear wheel would only spin about 3/4 of a revolution on it's own. When asked by his ride home after the race he simply replied "Yeah, I need to get that re-built." Second place went to 11 year old Brian Jorgensen (Team Jorgensen) third went to nine year old Hodgert Ranch local Reitler Hodgert and 4th went to six year old Tristan Won-Whitlach.
With the weather deteriorating the Advanced Men were anxious to get underway. Another LeMans style start and with everyone finding the correct bike at the top of the hill the racers charged around the .92 mile loop and stayed fairly tightly bunched for the first two laps. In the 30+ battle Donovan Grabowski (Lakeside) took the early lead, but it was Sunnyside's Mike Schindler who put the wood to everybody in the end. He was followed by Mike Martin (Compass Commercial) and Lakeside's Kent "Fast-Tack" Johnston. In the U29 Advanced race Michael Blahut (Mountain Bikers R Us) rode well to capture first while a broken spoke hindered Erik Osborn's (unattached) forward progress. He however ended up second anyway.
Once again thanks to all of our sponsors this season: Hammer Nutrition, Rudy Project, Strategic Mortgage, Cramer's Mortgage Services, Dr. Tad Hodgert, Hutch's, Sunnyside Sports, On The Way Bike Shop, Nancy P's Bakery, BicycleBlowout.com, GSR, Michael Nyberg, Clif Bar and PIP Printing. Also thanks to everyone at OBRA for all their hard work.
Don't forget! The December 14 race has been cancelled due to impending snow problems and the National Championships in Napa. We will however see you next year here in Bend for some more 'cross mayhem.
