WELLS FARGO TWILIGHT CRITERIUM TO INCLUDE WOMEN?S

RACE IN 2003

BOISE, Idaho ? The Wells Fargo Twilight Criterium will include a

women?s race in 2003, according to Race Director Mike Cooley. This

year?s event is scheduled for Saturday, July 26 with the women?s race

starting at 7:30 p.m.

?To help fill the void in women?s cycling created by the cancellation

of the Women?s Challenge, we decided that adding a women?s event to the

Wells Fargo Twilight Criterium would be the right thing to do,? Cooley

said. ?We have had women enter the event before, but this will be the

first year we will have a race exclusively for the women cyclists.?

The event will be opened to women who are licensed with the U.S.

Cycling Federation to compete in Pro, 1, 2 or 3 categories. They will

compete for a total purse of $3,000 with a payout to the top 10 riders.

More than 12,000 people are expected in Downtown Boise to watch what

has become one of Boise?s major summer attractions. The action gets

underway at 5:30 p.m. with the Men?s Cat 4 and 5 race, followed at 6:30

p.m. with the Men?s Cat 3 race. The Men?s event for Pro, 1 and 2

competitors will begin at 9 p.m. All racers must be registered with

the U.S. Cycling Federation (USCF).

Cyclists interested in competing in the Criterium can register online

at sportsbaseonline.com or by calling Cooley at (208) 343-3782. The

entry fee is $30.

?With the addition of the women?s race and the increased recognition

the Wells Fargo Twilight Criterium has received nationally, we are

expecting even more professional riders than we have seen in the past,?

said Cooley, who also is an owner of George?s Cycles in Boise. ?The

Twilight Criterium is one of the hottest races in the country.?

VeloNews, a national cycling magazine, recently named the event the

third best criterium in the U.S. behind #1 in Athens, GA and #2 in

Austin, TX.

Sanctioned by the USCF, the Wells Fargo Twilight Criterium is a timed

criterium that lasts one hour plus 5 laps for the Main Event and 45

minutes plus 1 lap for the preliminary races. The 1-kilometer course

runs through Downtown Boise on Main and Idaho Streets between 6th and

9th Streets. The start/finish line is located near Main St. and

Capitol Blvd.

Cash prizes are awarded to the top 20 finishers of the main men?s

event, including $3,000 to the winner. An awards ceremony will follow

the final race at approximately 10:15 p.m. Cat 3 racers will compete

for a $1,000 purse in prizes only, and Cat 4 and 5 racers will compete

for a $500 purse in prizes only.
