Memorial Day Weekend in Bend promises to be a bikeaholics dream come true. Guided road and MTB rides, Pickett's Charge mountain bike stage race and the first annual Memorial Day Criterium are all a part of the Bend Bicycle Festival slated for May 24-26. Oh yeah, there's this little band called Coldplay performing Sunday night too.
The criterium on Monday could see some top-level competition as former Bend resident and MTB'er gone Tri-geek, gone roadie Steve Larsen is rumored to be making a trip north from his digs in Davis, Ca. This has local Bend racers from Compass Commercial and Hutch's, not to mention Portland based Half Fast Velo giddy with anticipation. The course, a .7 mile business park loop, features wide, smooth pavement and a somewhat undulating course profile. Race promoter Brad Cockman feels it will offer all competitors a significant challenge. The four-corner course starts on a flat then gradually rolls down to the first right-hander. The second right-hander rolls back up slightly then finds the racers bombing down a fun little downhill to the third corner where the course kicks upward for about 150 meters at about 7-10 percent. The top of this little climb is where the race could be won, as the distance from the last corner to the finish line will be roughly 250 meters.
The Pro Men's 1/2/3 category prize list is five deep and the first three podium spots will split $100 courtesy of Mike Martin at Strategic Mortgage. All other categories will have $100 worth of merchandise going three deep. Numerous primes will be awarded in every category. Other sponsors include Hammer Nutrition, Gold's Gym, Wenzel Coaching, Bicycling Magazine, Deschutes Brewery, Voler Team Apparel, Clif Bar and the local Bend bike shops.
