Rose Festival/Mt. Tabor bicycle race: Sunday, June 29th
Portland, Oregon June 25, 2003 ? Team Rose City (formerly Rose City
Wheelmen), Oregon?s oldest bicycle club, is holding one of Oregon?s major
bicycle races Sunday, June 29, 2003 at Mt. Tabor Park in southeast Portland.
The race will take place around the upper reservoir on a hilly, 1.3-mile
loop. Officially sanctioned by the Oregon Bicycle Racing Association, the
race will actually include eleven separate events for all ages and
competitive levels.
The Phil Hohnstein Memorial Classic, for many years part of the Rose
Festival, returned last year as an officially sanctioned Rose Festival
event. Team Rose City, the bicycle club co-founded by Hohnstein, has brought
the event back as an officially sanctioned Rose Festival event.
Major sponsors include Russ Auto Group, Portland Tribune, Northwest
NewsChannel 8 and River City Bicycles. Additional race sponsors include
Kissler?s Bicycles of Beaverton, Higgins Restaurant, Alpenrose Dairy,
Coventry Cycle Works, the new web-only Oregon Magazine, and the Bicycle
Transportation Alliance.
?The Mt. Tabor Classic has a long and interesting history,? said race
director Bruce Harmon of Team Rose City. ?Top cycling athletes will be
participating. This is an interesting and entertaining race to watch. There
are many vantage points around the course to watch colorful bicycles and
riders representing teams from around the Northwest is exciting races all
day from 8:45 am to 4:30 pm.?
?As one of the most challenging races of the 2003 season for the
150-200 competitors, each circuit through the beautiful forested park
includes a hill that climbs 136 feet in elevation each lap while the speeds
on the descents often exceed 40 miles per hour,? Harmon added. Prize purse
will exceed $3000.00.
Recumbents also to race
Adding interest to traditional bicycle racing, is a recumbent cycle
event. The low-slung recumbents will compete in a three-lap exhibition race,
which is the only race of this type in Oregon.
Team Rose City has promoted the Mt. Tabor race annually since 1952.
The event is named after the late Phil Hohnstein, the race originator and
sponsor until the early 1990s. Hohnstein owned Phil?s Bicycle Shop on N.E.
Broadway for nearly four decades, and was a charter member of Rose City
Wheelmen.
Founded in 1951, Team Rose City celebrates its 52nd anniversary this
year as Oregon?s oldest bicycle club. Members of Team Rose City have been
dominant in competitive cycling at local, state, national and international
levels, winning many senior and masters state and national championships.
Club members also won gold, silver and bronze medals at the World Masters
Games held in Portland in 1998.
