International Competition set for Alpenrose
Alpenrose Challenge Schedule for July 18-20, 2003.
Alpenrose Challenge will be held on the Alpenrose Velodrome located at the
Alpenrose Dairy complex located 6149 SW Shattuck Road, Portland, Oregon.
PORTLAND, OREGON ? July 10, 2003 ? Once again two time Olympic Gold
Medalist, Marty Rothstein will be competing at the fifth annual Alpenrose
Challenge, July 18-20. Marty will be joining USA World Team members Jame
Carney and Stephen Alfred and racers from all over the world at the storied
Alpenrose Velodrome.
The Alpenrose Challenge 2003 is scheduled to kick off Friday July 18th, and
run through Sunday 20th. Returning this year will be Jeremy Vanschoonhoven,
Multiple National Trials Champion. The Alpenrose Challenge will be part of
American Velodrome Challenge (AVC) Series, which promises to bring top
riders from the U.S. competing for a chance to represent the USA at the 2003
World Championships.
The Alpenrose Challenge boasts the largest international track competition
west of the Mississippi. Many riders from Canada, Great Britain, Germany,
South Africa, Australia and more will make their way to Portland Oregon to
compete at the Alpenrose Challenge for $15,000 cash prize! Back again this
year is Australian fast guy Jeff Hopkins and the 18-year-old current New
Zealand national Madison champion, Adam Curry.
Unlike most bicycle racing, Velodrome racing is a spectator sport. The
Velodrome is a stadium type venue that allows you to see the entire course
of the race. Here in Portland we have a tradition of fast, exciting track
racing at Alpenrose which is one of the steepest tracks in North America
with it?s 46 degree banking and fast drop-offs in the turns. Track racers
fly around the Velodrome on bikes with one gear and no brakes at speeds of
40 mph plus. They seem to defy gravity as they ride the steep banking,
which is as high as a two-story building at the rail. Each race is short
and the action is fast and furious.
Along with three action packed days of racing, the Alpenrose Challenge will
also be hosting exhibitors. Spectators will be able to check out what's new
in the bicycle industry, purchase cycling apparel, and EAT lots and lots of
food! The racing begins at 10:00 am for the morning sessions and at 4:00
for the evening session both Saturday and Sunday. There will also be timed
event racing on Friday, at 10 am and 5:00 pm for the fanatical bike race
spectator. As always, admission is absolutely free!
DON'T MISS THE ALPENROSE CHALLENGE 2003 - THE HOTTEST THING ON TWO WHEELS
(AND NO BRAKES)! ? Experience 46 degree burns!
