Portland to Host Two Cyclo-Cross Nats

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (August 4, 2003) - USA Cycling announced Monday that

the 2003 USCF Cyclo-cross National Championships will take place in

Portland, Oregon for the next two years. The events will take place December

12-14, 2003 and December 10-12, 2004. National championships jerseys will be

on the line for men's and women's elite, espoir, junior, and masters

age-group categories.

USA Cycling selected Portland-based Club Vivo Promotions, well-known and

highly regarded event organizers, to promote and manage the events in

Portland. Club Vivo has earned a national reputation for promoting the

Cyclo-cross Crusade Racing Series, the largest cyclo-cross series in the

United States. The 'Cross Crusade draws more than 350 riders per week during

it's eight-race series, which last year included two UCI (Union Cicliste

Internationale) sanctioned events

USA Cycling's Field Operations Manager Matt Murphy is thrilled with the

location of the national championship venue and the promoting team Club

Vivo. "USA Cycling is very excited to bring Cyclo-cross Nationals back to

the Pacific Northwest for the first time since 1996 when it was held in

Seattle," commented Murphy. "The area has a storied tradition of great cross

events and we look forward to two new chapters in Portland in 2003 and

2004."

Brad Ross and Brian Witty of Club Vivo Promotions shared Murphy's enthusiasm

about the return of the Cyclo-cross National Championships to the region.

"We are very proud to host our National Championships for the 2003 and 2004

seasons. Cyclo-cross is the fastest growing discipline in cycling, and U.S.

athletes are breaking into the elite ranks internationally. Club Vivo's goal

is to create a course and atmosphere that will prepare our riders to make an

impact at the World Championships," said Ross.

"Cyclo-cross has grown as a grassroots effort in Oregon where the sport

enjoys a strong following. The knowledgeable crowds and broad community

support will ensure that America's elite cyclo-crossers will experience

top-level racing and ambiance here in Portland" added Witty.

Specific venue and event details are being finalized at this time. Final

venue information and a complete event schedule will be released and

available September 1 at www.usacycling.org
