Relay Mtn Bike race added to OBRA schedule

It is certainly within the race organizer's and racers best interest for

events to select separate dates but OBRA does not and should not have a

mechanism for providing date protection. Any agreements to cooperate in

scheduling is through communication between race organizers. Although it

may be onerous to individual organizers, competition in the marketplace is a

good thing.

In this particular case it appears that the organizer of the race has not

done any communication with other organizers. In fact, the event was

advertised in multisport publications before OBRA was even aware of it. His

marketing appears to be towards the general fitness market rather than more

specific marketing to bike racers. It remains to be seen whether both this

and his inappropriate scheduling over another event will improve or decrease

the rider draw for his event. For the State Championships it produces a

challenge as it will no longer have a date monopoly.

Sounds like a great events but....

THAT IS THE SAME TIME AS THE OREGON CROSS COUNTRY

MOUNTAIN BIKE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP....I thought we all

agreed not to host events on the same dates as each

other, so racers would not have to pick between

events!

*****FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE*****

Portland, OR ? February 2004

Sweat rolls down from beneath your helmet, cutting

small arroyos through the

dust on your forehead, running into your eyes and

over your sunglass lenses.

The salt temporarily stings your eyes and makes

vision an acquired talent.

Your legs compete with your lungs for oxygen, as you

navigate the undulating

climbs and rocks strewn on the trail. There is not

enough water to quench

your thirst, but still you think, ?Only 20-miles

until the finish?no

problem!?

?Are you ready to punish yourself??

Welcome to the PIRANHA RELAY, the Pacific

Northwest?s most challenging

mountain bike race. Part of the Warm Springs

Endurance Series, the PIRANHA

RELAY will be staged on Saturday, July 10, 2004 on

the Warm Springs

Reservation in Central Oregon?s high desert. With

race classes comprised of

solo, two and four person teams, the unique 100-mile

mountain bike race is

designed to challenge expert and novice riders

alike. Teams consist of all

men, all women, or coed (equal number of men and

women). The relay begins

at 6:00 am in the town of Warm Springs, located

approximately 100-miles

southeast of Portland, OR and 60-miles northwest of

Bend, OR.

Gaining 1,600+ feet in elevation per lap, the course

is a 25-mile mixed bag

of single track, logging and gravel roads,

interspersed with a few short

sections of asphalt. With stunning glimpses of Mt.

Jefferson and the

Cascades, the dusty loop snakes through shaded

canyons, fir forests and lava

fields, and rises over volcanic bluffs. The race

will be dusty for those in

the pack and only the lead dog will have a clear

view. With a 12-hour time

limit, riders must average 8.5 miles per hour in

order register an official

finish.

Held in conjunction with double and quadruple

marathons, footraces

respectively named the EL DEUCE and the QUATER

(staged on July 17 ? 18,

2004), the PIRANHA RELAY offers athletes from across

the country an

opportunity to push themselves beyond conceived

boundaries and to discover a

new level awareness.

The brainchild of Portland-based veteran

ultra-runner and shoe designer Kip

Buck, the Warm Springs Endurance Series promises to

throw a multitude of

challenges at even the most experienced endurance

athlete. "I wanted to

design an event series that went way beyond

'tough'," said Buck. "With the

intense heat of the high desert terrain, challenging

climbs and descents,

the PIRANHA RELAY, EL DEUCE and QUATAR do just

that."

In addition to the personal achievement of

participating, cash and prizes

are awarded to top finishers. For more information

regarding the race

series, including registration fees, directions,
