The word "apocrypha" is used in a variety of ways that can be confusing
to the general reader, especially on how the word might pertain to the
world of the Cyclocross Crusade. Confusion arises partly from the
ambiguity of the ancient usage of the word, and partly from the modern
application of the term to different groups of religious books.
Etymologically the word means "things that are hidden," but why it was
chosen to describe certain writings is not clear. Some have suggested
that the books were "hidden" or withdrawn from common use because they
were deemed to contain mysterious or esoteric lore, too profound to be
communicated to any except the initiated. Thusly, what follows is yet
another modern application of the word "apocrypha" as it pertains the
historical musings of the 'Crossc Crusade scribe. These historic and
profound writings are obviously the synthesis of the modern world's
finest cyclocross racing series- the Cyclocross Crusade.
'No truer tidings of great deeds and malicious mal-fortune are found at
the dawning, as the day breaks the horizon and our tale begins.
The path before lay as a thrice-folded serpent, that offered little but
the promise of pain. Eyes narrowed and jaw set, a face turns heavenward
to ask the Gods of Cyclocross, "Is what I did so terribly wrong?"
Naught but rain does the dull leaden sky return in reply. In the breast
arises the answer sought and always known, "You chose this course, and
you must live with the result." Somehow comforted with this the gaze
lowers and reaches across the field to the first gathering of friends,
companions and rivals.
Gold-bright offerings of miraculous alloys and clever composites sat
assembled, awaiting. A lone cry breaches the sullen drizzle, "For each
and all a challenge to the Demonlings who set and marked this
course.what have you decreed that I shall suffer? For he who my
knobbied-tyred edge's sharpness feareth, shall ne'r break through this
fierce, glutenous mud!" Muted calm befalls momentously to give way to
claxons and clarions of furious fervor as the Horde goes to seek out the
grendel beast of wood, sinew and steel beyond the treeline.
With sudden hurryings of foot and pedaled steed, hale and hardy warriors
all pour onto the barriered walls. From these pained beginnings is
birthed a clutch of aspirant heros who carry forth to garner glory or at
the least, a tale for the raised ale-cup in the smoke filled beer-hall.
Sore is one's soul to say that only crimson tinged bogs and barriers
dyed with an admixture of mud and gore be the reward for many a blood
be-sprinkled 'crosser this day.
Snicker-snapped and whip-cracked, ever pushed forward in pursuit. A
body is but a vessel. At times it is a poor vessel seemingly made only
to suffer. Yet within this modest shell beats an indomitable fire that
will burn through all human hardship.
Some seek hell-runes and heaping horrors, others visions of imtimate
glory or fantasies of redemption. Many will leave with ought but a wail
of regret for opportunity missed or courage lacking. Still on the anon
they will all return to the dew flecked grasslands and the rock-strewn
pathways.
At the dusking, the shadows draws close and the evensong lights over
the echoes battles fought, won and lost. Faring homeward the bold
hearted heros laden with plunder and the reek of noble slaughter, for
much feasting and resting time is to be had before arms are struck once
again on unhallowed fields.
Alas, words and deeds cannot be unbound."
