RE: [OBRA Chat] Are gas prices keeping you from races?

Kinda hard to do in Oakridge(not drive that

is)...can't buy a lot of stuff here, so you have to

drive to Eugene. It is easy for people in a big city

to drive less, but us in the boonie's must drive at

times

And adjusted for inflation, the price has not risen

Try that with the Portland housing market, or

$30,000 for an SUV.

Besides, I hardly ever drive anyway. That's what

bicycles are for!

Does gas figure into my "cost" of going to a race,

or even a regular

ride? Sure. It costs more than not going at all. But

honestly, I think

more about the traffic and pollution I generate by

driving to a race

than the cost of the gas. I'm the one that chose

what car to drive based

on a number of factors, including the cost of fuel.

And at the lousy

25mpg that my Toyota Previa minivan gets, yeah, I

think about it. The

irony of the fact that I, a cyclist, only use my car

to get to rides and

races weighs heavily on my mind. But it's my own

damn fault for buying a

car that sucks so much gas to do so. I know I have

no control over the

price of gas, and never will, so I try to plan

accordingly. Ask

yourself: do you?

There's a great joke in the traffic engineering

world: You are not stuck

in traffic, you ARE traffic. If you don't want to

pay the so-called high

cost of gas, arrange your life so you don't have to

rely on it, or rely

on it less, or shut up and quit complaining.

I don't know what all the fuss is about.

As a promoter outside the Portland metro area where

a

majority of OBRA racers live, I was wondering if gas

prices have caused you not to travel to races?

Thanks

Randy
