Great post Chris:
I don't want to bash on everyone who uses an iPod cuz they are really cool!
I remember when the Walkman
came out (yea..I'm that old) and everyone had one! Well..I still have mine
but I don't listen to it on the bicycle!
It's such a kick when everyone has their little slim gadgets on and I get on
the bus and haul out my big yellow Sony Sports
Walkman and throw in a cassette tape! YEA! :)
Anyway..I think what it actually comes down to is some people cant do much
of ANYTHING without their iPods!!!
I see people on the train twitchin' in a panic until they get their little
white ear buds in then settle down.
Runners and walkers are always wired for sound and cant hear me screaming
"ON YOUR LEFT!"
I guess my gripe comes from my work at a neuro technology company that sells
audio soundtracks that don't work
when transferred to other file formats like MP3. When we tell people they
can't transfer their
soundtracks to their ipods they become quite upset even when we tell them it
can entirely
eliminate the effectiveness of the soundtrack!!
Give me convenience of give me death!

I concur here. We could get scientific tackling it from a motor control
angle. Think about when you're driving with the radio on in heavy city
traffic; most people turn the radio down or off to concentrate. Our
brains have limited capacity to focus on multiple skills, which is
complicated further by fatigue. If you're so bored that you need an
IPOD in a race, you probably should find a new sport. If it's a
motivation thing, you're still probably wasting your time; break the
habit and start training without one too! Moreover, it's helpful to have
all your senses handy in a tight pack; I've often heard crashes before I
saw them.
USAC needed to ban race radios in all but Pro 1 races because they were
getting way out of control. I raced on just one team with radios, yet I
was seeing too many 3 & 4 teams with radios. Funny thing is that I
recall a cat 3 team at a big stage race here all line up for the crit
with radios. Wouldn't you know it, half way through the race they were
all watching from the curb.
