Unfortunately, this is an all too common problem. As a police officer, I
find it really frustrating that people don't record the serial numbers for
their bikes. Most times the bike gets stolen, the owner reports the theft,
but usually doesn't have a definitive identifier that can be input into the
LEDS/NCIC database. The bike may be stolen, but without some form of
"registration" such as a S/N it can't be connected to a stolen property
report or a person. Please people, please record the serial number for your
bike. If your bike doesn't have one, borrow an etcher and put one on the
bike somewhere where a police officer can find it. I know carbon bikes are
hard, but usually you can etch something on the derailleur hanger. One good
way to do it is to mark your bike with your drivers license like this:
OR1234567DL, that is the state/number/DL=drivers license and is a readily
understood way for cops to run the number and connect it to an owner.

We just had a 2005 Kona Caldera come in for a tune-up and am sure that
this is not the rightful owner. Although we have run the serial number and
no hits, thought maybe someone out there have heard of one getting stolen.
