The response from the official in me is. It is illegal to ride with riders
from other categories in a road race. You may not take pace of cooperate
with riders in a category other than your own.

I'm not trying to whine, but I would like to know other riders feelings are
about this subject.
Last Sunday at Banana Belt 3 in the Cat 5 race, I flatted out at mile
15. After getting 2 wheel changes, I finally found one that allowed me to
use a couple of gears without the chain slipping (thanks to you who's wheel
I borrowed). I rode solo for most of the remainder of the race and managed
to catch and pass several other Cat 5 participants. On the last lap, I let
one guy tag onto my wheel, then I caught two other guys riding together and
told them to jump on, which they did. I rode the last seven miles in front
pulling these guys and even slowing down on the hills to allow them to stay
with me.
Just before the 200 m mark there is a hill and as I started up it, I
had to fiddle with the drivetrain which was slipping pretty bad. Two of the
guys took advantage of this and jumped away, leaving me searching for a gear
that would hold.
It's not that big of a deal that they did this at the end of the race
because we all finished way down in our catagory, and I wouldn't even think
about this had we all been going for a top ten finish.
Yes, this is a race. What do others of you in OBRA land think of
this situation? Would everyone do the same thing as these guys did under
the same situation or would you let the guy doing all of the pulling finish
in the front?
