Monty Hill
Brian,
Hi Brian, My name is Monty I am one of the two guys you are referring to. And my take on the event is slightly different. I completely agree with you that it would be bad manners to suck a draft just to gain position.
I got dropped on a hill on lap 3 and rather than continuing to chase, I slowed to wait for some other riders who I knew were behind me to make the ride more enjoyable and to work together to come in a bit quicker. In my mind if I get dropped the 'race' is over. With that said at our pace I was just trying to ride single file to stay out of the cars that were streaming past and frankly I was not even riding close enough, or were we fast enough to get a 'draft', especially on that last long uphill, which I rode beside you on. When you caught us your pace helped inspire us to bring it home a little quicker. But frankly as I rode beside you on some of those last uphills, I could have left earlier on my own, but was just riding along with the group. The sprint at end was just to push myself and have fun, more than to get ahead of others, in my mind we all finished together. There was no pack in front or any cars coming.
The guy who finished in front of me, Mike, was behind me until the end, and if you feel we took advantage of you, I must apologize. And when I see you out on the road again, I would be all to happy to share the lead, In most of my goup rides, the lead moves to the left to give someone else the lead.
Best regards
Monty
