I agree that it is fine to promote cycling-related events on this chat
board and other services that would be of interest to bike racers. I'd
venture that we're all on the same page.

However, I think that this person crossed the line of etiquette by
overdoing it (9 promotional messages in less than 2 weeks complete with
a plethora of animated smiley faces) with the final straw being a
promotional message for her event responding to a simple request for
info on the Silverton RR. I was annoyed when I read that post as it
came across as really pushy.

Chat boards are self-policing and someone responded publicly (and I
gather others did so privately). While I'm sorry her feelings got hurt,
it is incumbent on those who post to learn about the etiquette of the
chat community beforehand and to self-regulate. Otherwise, the effort
backfires because you end up irritating people rather than informing
them of and enticing them to your event.

I didn't mean to upset people and we now know this
lady was new to promoting and posting on chat boards
and was just trying to help her town BUT I have been
trying to help her out since her 1st post and she has
gotten a fair amount of e-mails sent to her
personally(not posted to everyone) saying she can't
post non racing stuff, who cares?, too many post and
so on...it has been more then just a couple e-mails.

I was just trying to point out that this page/chat is
more then racing I think, because you have to ride
your bike to get in shape to race. I put on a covered
bridge bike tour and some of you OBRA racers come
every year, so there is some cross over.

Well, she was just responding to a post and that's the only reason the
subject line said that. Really, it's not that big of a deal. Her other
posts were spot on. :)

I sent an e-mail letting her know that I didn't appreciate the ride
promotion sent out with the subject line RE:Silverton Road Race.
It's one thing to have the subject line note the name of the event ride,
but to post what basically amounts to free advertising under the guise
of a race-related e-mail subject is different. I didn't "hammer"
anyone, but pointed out the poor etiquette.

Sound like this poor lady got hammered for trying to
put on a fun ride...I was thinking this OBRA chat was
for everything not just racing and that OBRA race was
a different chat board just for racing...I see the
"lawyer rides" and other events that are non racing
posted. I see stuff for sale on here all the time.

So what is up???

Thanks

I'm guessing she probably received an unkind email 'off list'. Considering the volume of messages sent regarding the pee thing I wouldn't think an occasional ride plug (with the proper subject) would be found acceptable.

OBRA Race List for race flyers, announcements, results, no chat.

OBRA This is the mailing list for the Oregon Bicycle Racing Association. Our mission is to foster and grow the sport of bicycle racing in Oregon - road, track, mountain bike and cyclocross. This list is to be used to post for-sale bicycle related items and to spark discussions about the sport.

I'm not sure what you've been reading to get that impression.

Nobody said she couldn't post, nor did anyone "hammer" her.

Try reading what was said again, and your deep concerns should be relieved.

I'm not sure what you've been reading to get that impression.

Nobody said she couldn't post, nor did anyone "hammer" her.

Try reading what was said again, and your deep concerns should be relieved.

Thanks
