Subject: Victims Impact Panel for drunk driving is looking for volunteers
Date: Wed, 10 May 2006 18:22:19 -0700
As you may know, I?m representing bicyclists on a DUII Task Force
that?s trying to figure out how to improve drunk driving enforcement
and treatment.
Again, thanks to everyone who responded to my informal survey last
week. I got a flood of responses that have convinced me that drunk
drivers are a huge concern for cyclists. (For more information about
what I found, see
http://www.patch.com/words/bicycling/2006/05/04/bicyclists-and-duii-
motorists.)
It also became clear to me that drunk driving is something that we
cyclists feel pretty helpless about. My main goal on the Task Force is
to identify steps that concerned cyclists can take to address DUIIs.
Multnomah County organizes a Victim Impact Panel that is mandatory for
convicted drunk drivers. It?s a way for drivers to hear directly from
the people whose lives have been affected by a driver?s decision to
drive drunk.
I suggested that some cyclists might be willing to volunteer. I think
it would be good to bring the voice of non-drivers to this panel and
remind these (and all) drivers that not all road users drive cars.
If you or a loved one has been the victim of a drunk driver, or if you
are a former DUII offender, and you?d be willing to share your
experience in front of an audience, please consider volunteering for
this panel.
