If you like the reflective tape idea you might also be looking for some
way to use all those free stickers you get with your new bike goodies
or in the race swag bags.
The same businesses that do reflective signs usually do magnetic ones
as well. This also results in waste pieces of high quality material in
odd sizes. Get some, put your stickies on it and then trim with
scissors. Presto! Custom refrigerator magnets.
Hint: Kids love the bright colors and have great fun with rearranging
them. You'll be a hero if you let little visitors take some home for
the fridge at their house.

How did I acquire all this stuff?
Simple - I asked. The Sign Co. does a
lot of work on ambulances and other public safety vehicles. They cut and install the
reflective tape, and always have scraps left over. I asked them what they do with
the scraps. Normally they toss scraps, but one of the employees
happened to have been hoarding a bunch of it, in case there was a use
for it. Well, I offered them an excellent use and they were more than
happy to give me all their scraps, gratis. I dropped off my last batch at the Community
Cycling Center, and now I have more.
Now I am sure my source is not the
only place that does such work. If others were to look around at similar businesses I am
sure you would find people happy to put
scrap reflective tape to good use. This stuff is not cheap, by the way.
I would estimate the retail value of the tape I got today at more than
$200. The last
batch I got was probably double that at a minimum.
One heck of a way to reduce, reuse, reCYCLE if you
ask me.
