Institute of Sport

45 minute presentation on "What Does It Take To Win A Bike Race? An
Australian Perspective" followed by a 15 minute question/answer session

Monday, May 22nd, 7:00 pm at the Boyle Education Center (BEC) on the main
COCC campus, 2600 NW College Way, Bend.

Dr. David T. Martin is currently one of seven senior sport physiologists
working within the Department of Physiology at the Australian Institute of
Sport in Canberra. For the last 11 years David has been responsible for
providing sport science support to Winter Sport Athletes (cross-country
skiing, short track speed skating, mogul skiing, snowboard, skeleton) and
Cyclists. David has been the sport science coordinator for Cycling
Australia for the last 6 years. David has been involved in sport science
research in the following areas: thermoregulation, quantification of
training loads, competition analysis, sport specificity of laboratory
testing, tapering, peaking and altitude training. Research finding from
these research projects have been presented at International Scientific
Meetings as well as local coaching seminars. David has co-authored more
than 40 scientific publications, and also written book chapters, and layman
cycling articles.

David received his B.S. degree in Zoology from the College of Idaho, his
M.S. degree in Exercise Physiology from Northern Michigan University and
his Ph.D. in Physiology from the University of Wyoming. For 1.5 years
prior to beginning doctoral studies, David worked as a research assistant at
the United States Olympic Training Centre in Colorado Springs Colorado.
Master's research focused on stability of the "Anaerobic Threshold" training
intensity and doctoral research was aimed at better understanding peaking,
tapering and overtraining in cyclists.

David is originally from Oregon and his wife, Mary Kay, is from Wyoming.
They have two children and enjoy traveling, snow skiing, bushwalking,
mountain cycling, surfing and running.
