Thanks for the report. I had the pleasure of coaching Alice in her high
school ski racing career. I agree that she's usually quiet, yet a tenacious
competitor in any event, be it soccer, skiing, roller hockey and now bike
racing. It's cool to see her come into her own in this sport.

OBRA folks,
Six of our very own Oregon racers, from Oregon State
Univ., just returned from Collegiate Nationals in
Colorado Springs so I thought I would tell you a little
bit about it. Some of you may have already seen the
results at Velonews.com, but for those of you who have
not, Alice Pennington represented Oregon to the fullest
taking 3 medals home. Since I have started racing I
have felt that Alice is one of the most overlooked
women racing in Oregon because she is not flashy and is
pretty quiet (and she will probably hate me for sending
out this email). If anything this weekend just
reaffirms my belief that she is one of the fastest
women in Oregon. She placed 5th in the crit and 3rd in
the road race. She missed an early break that managed
to stay away and win, but punished a 4 women chase
group up every climb (950 ft per lap with 9 mile laps)
eventually winning the group sprint for third after
leading it out for the last 200 meters. All three of
the women in the chase group with Alice fell off their
bikes with leg cramps as soon as they crossed the
finish line. Alice was the highest placed rider not
from altitude and I believe that Alice might be wearing
a national champions jersey now if we were not at
altitude for the race.
Barry Wicks managed to place 25th out of 155 starters
in the hardest road race that either of us have ever
done. No recovery time, no air, and about 6500 feet of
climbing against some of the fastest racers in the
country, nuff said. Nick Skenzick is one of the few
Oregon riders in recent years to even finish the
roughly 80 minute crit which is a good accomplishment
in itself. We were also one of the few teams to finish
every rider in the road race. Our team was Barry,
Nick, Damian Schmitt, Emily Babcock, Alice, and
myself. It was a great weekend.
