I think separating expert from semi-pro, pro is a good thing. You
could
call
the catagory elite, for example.If an expert is regularly finishing in
the
top 3 move him up to elite(would't it be cool to tell your friends you
race
pro). This could expand the elite field while keeping the expert
catagory
competetive. What I really want you to hear is that the gap from sport
to
expert is quite large just with the true experts and widening it could
effect attendance( I can think of one sport that quit racing the
series
because of this-no names).Obviously if a expert is in contention to
win
the
whole series he SHOULD MOVE UP. I feel this is a shared opinion from
our
road friends as i see the latest catagories e-mails. Come on how many
sports
could compete in a 100 mile cat 3 field. I ride 6 days a week and
would
be
lucky to be competetive.What I see happening now is fine if you decide
to
keep the course. I just thought you would like some input. I
appreciate
all
you volunteers out there and wouldn't attempt to try to do any better
than
you.I plan on promoting 2 of the southern oregon cyclocross series so
I'm
sure I'll get my share of people with fractured egos.That about sums
it
up
so I'll get off my soapbox.

Renee, Evalyn and I track points by the Sobe OBRA cagegories 1
through
27. We get results from each race a bit differnently, but we have
not
recieved any results this year that have broken out the Pros
seperately
from
the Experts.
We could probably seperate the Pro's from the Experts (there are
only
3
people in the state the carry Pro licences - Erik Tonkin, Carl
Dekker,
and
Jeff Burnard). Sean Doyle is also carries a Pro licence, but he
lives
in
California. There are a few Semi-Pros in the state - Barry Wicks,
Gordon
Cumming, and myself. We could probably break them out from the Pros
and
Experts also so that we have 3 groups instead of the 1 large group.
Personally, I don't care how it is broken out. We could say
that
Barry
Wicks is the 1st place SemiPro, Erik is the 1st Pro and Chad Swanson
is
the
1st Expert. If that is what people want, that is fine. It is
always
hard
to tell how finely to break up the categories.
What would your preference be for the break-out and do you think
that
any
other experts would have a problem with any other break points?

I'm concerned that my previous e-mail ''points for expert senior
men''
sounded too much like selfish whining. when I wrote the e-mail I was
a
little frustrated which isn't my style. For that I apologize.
That aside I would like to refraise my concerns which I feel are
legitamate.
My points are
1) The OBRA racer information document ''welcome racers01.doc''
clearly
states and I quote ''Pro/Semi-Pro/Expert will be scored together for
Best
All-around Rider (BAR) and will translate directly to Cat 1/2 on the
road
side. (The Sobe Series has chosen to separate these catagories.''
There it is in black and white. Why is OBRA not following its own
rules?
2) When I first started racing the gimmick that really hooked me was
the
chance of getting points. This caused myself to turn a local racer
almost
exclusively to one that drives to all ends of the state.I can vouch
for
a
few of my friends that they are of the same mind as myself. In a
very
competitive class to begin with those were my motivation.
3) Last year the classes were kept separate and I was very happy to
accept
the results. If OBRA decided to change the system why weren't we
notified?
To change them now would effect my attendance, as the larger races
would
be
less enticing (FINALS, races in Bend).
I would sure appreciate any input from my peers as to their
opinion,
and
would definately like to be enlightened on the thinking of current
system(Jon, Rene,and Evelyn)
