years ago a certain excellent sprinter, who fequently still wins PIR raced without a number and placed well, the officials after the race pointed out he didn't have a number on, and quick as a whip, with an absolute straight face, he said, "really?, it must have blown off"
it was a moment of pure b.s. genius!

read. The bottom line is that if the number can't be read you don't get
a place. I always here the whining about not being placed and officials
threatening this or that, but it's irrelevant. If they ruin the number
and can't be placed, it's punishment enough. I say even if they win and
the number itself can't be read, no placing. It would be rare, but a
hard-line approach that way would fix the problem IMO.
