I have had several messages asking this same question and making the same
suggestion. This is how the problem has been addressed to date. So far,
individual race organizers have been able to either talk the road master out
of the excessive requirement or they have been able to appease them by
renting a small number of signs or some other maneuver. In other words, the
"address this locally" has been done and has been working but will likely,
possibly in the near future, stop working. There have been others who have
volunteered to contact someone they know in county government. This is
appreciated but I fear that an uncoordinated effort is likely to do more
harm than good.
What we need is someone to investigate the issue and then to coordinate an
effort to keep this from happening on a statewide level. This will
undoubtedly require several people contacting several people in governmental
positions as well as investigating the applicable laws, rules and
regulations. This effort will need a point person. That will not be me,
Candi or any of the other people that are currently doing OBRA "stuff" since
we are all way to busy doing what we are doing.
If you are willing to be the point person then please step up. If you are
willing to help the point person, let's wait until we find one.

What are the two counties? It probably would be better to adress this
as a local issue initially, and racers who reside in those counties
probably would have a better chance of convincing the authorities.

OBRA has road signs that you have all seen. These were purchased
because
they are required by ODOT as per

are
made on sheet aluminum and use a tripod stand which is something
commonly
used for temporary road side signs all over the state. We are
currently
having a problem in 2 counties where the road use authority is stating
that
these are not acceptable. In one case they are requiring that the
stand be
a spring base and in another they are requiring that the signs be roll
up
fabric signs purchased only from an ODOT approved vendor. In one case
they
are asking that these signs be place every 1/2 mile on both sides of
the
road.
These requirements are beyond what can reasonably be done for many
reasons.
Clearly these maneuvers are being done by the county road use
authority as a
way to deny permission to use roads for racing. This has not been an
issue
in the past but I see it becoming a big issue in the near future.
This
could make it practically impossible to race bikes on regular roads.
We need some people to take on this issue and see if there is anything
that
can be done to minimize the negative impact on the sport. I am hoping
that
there is someone on this list that will be willing to take on this
project.
