After reading this tragic story I need to make a valid point to all
cyclists. I have been hit by a car that took a year off of my life and
I want to make a suggestion.

CARRY YOUR ID at all times. Take a copy of your insurance card if you
have one and carry it with you. I have a pouch or wallet with zippers
that comes with a zipper and pockets and a string for around my neck. I
carry this pouch with me with emergency phone numbers of my loved ones.
WHY???? You never know when you are going to be found dead, unconscious,
injured and unable to speak for yourself. YOUR FAMILY WILL THANK YOU!!!

Sad news.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office is investigating a crash that claimed
the lives of two bicyclists, after they were struck by a car on Highway 47,
south of the City of Forest Grove in unincorporated Washington County. The
victims have been identified as Darrel McDaniel, 65, and Sheryl McDaniel,
61. The Driver of the car is not being identified at this time.

Washington County Deputies along with members of the Washington County Crash
Analysis Reconstruction Team (CART) are investigating a crash that occurred
at 11:45 AM, Monday morning. The preliminary investigation indicates that
Mr. and Mrs. McDaniel were riding their bicycles north on Highway 47, north
of SW Anderson Rd. and south of the City of Forest Grove. They were riding
on the paved shoulder, not in the main travel lane.

For an unknown reason, the driver of a 2002 Saab veered off the road and
struck the two cyclists. Mrs. McDaniel was pronounced dead at the scene.
Mr. McDaniel was transported, via Life Flight, to Legacy Emanuel Hospital,
where he later succumbed to his injuries. Both riders were wearing helmets.

Initially, Deputies were unable to identify the victims because neither one
of them had any identification with them. With help from the media, and the
Washington County Coroner's Office, both parties were identified as
residents of Forest Grove and their family was quickly notified.

At this time, there is no indication of alcohol involved in the crash.
