Kris Schamp
Greetings everybody,
We are only four weeks away from the start of the 2nd Portland Mountain Bike Short Track Series.
Here are some updates I thought you might be interested in.
1) Skibowl MTB Short Track Races on Sun June 18 and Sat July 1: I am helping Petr at SkiBowl staging two pre-series MTB short track races on the mountain. Yesterday we laid out the course and all I can say is that it should be a blast for pros, beginners and everyone in between! Check out the course photos that I took and that are posted at: http://www.portlandracing.com/skibowl-shorttrack.html.
This will be a great training opportunity for anyone who wants to get in race shape by the time we kick off the series.
2) We are squeezing in an extra heat in our race schedule to prevent the sport and pro/elite/expert fields from getting overcrowded. Sport Women and Singlespeed riders will share the 6:30 pm race heat, while Sport Men (by far the largest category) will be racing all by themselves. Our Monday night race schedule looks as follows:
5:45 pm: Kiddie Race (2?)
6:00 pm: Beginners & Juniors (20?)
6:30 pm: Sport Women & Singlespeed (25-30?)
7:00 pm: Sport Men (25-30?)
7:30 pm: Pro/Elite & Expert (30-45?)
3) The series finale will be held on Sunday Aug 13. This will give out-of-towners - or anyone who is too busy on Mondays - a chance to check out what the short track hoopla is all about. Tentative race schedule for the final race day:
9:00 am: Beginners & Juniors (20?)
9:30 am: Sport Women & Singlespeed (30?)
10:00 am: pre-riding (30?)
10:30 am: Sport Men (30?)
11:00 pm: Pro/Elite & Expert (45?)
Noon: kiddie race and picnic/BBQ
1:00 pm: Awards & Series Raffle.
Note: the final race is NOT a double-pointer. All races will count equally. However, only your five best races (out of six) will count towards the overall series standings.
4) Sponsors: We have been able to line up some great sponsors who like all of us are thrilled to support and grow this grassroots race series. Clif Bar has stepped up to be our new title sponsor, while last year's title sponsor Bike N' Hike will be our special women?s sponsor. Other series sponsors include Giant, Bike Gallery, Rocky Mountain Bicycles, Chris King, Yakima, New Seasons, St Honore Bakery, and Dirt Rag. We are still looking for a beer/beverage sponsor, so if anyone has a connection (besides the one most of us have), please let me know.
That's it for now. I am looking forward to seeing you all at our first race, which is on Monday July 10th. And don't forget to pre-register before the end of June if you want your personalized race plate! More details at: http://www.portlandracing.com/registration.html
Cheers!
~Kris
