I am not a road racer, but I did grow up near Baker (75 miles South). If you have not been to that area the beauty is astounding. The Elkhorn mountains that run on the West side of the Baker Valley are pretty amazing and rugged. The Wallowa range is to the East and Northeast, then off to the Southeast over the sage hills is the southern end of Hell's Canyon. The Southwest area out of town takes one out toward the heart of the Blue mountains where the middle fork of the John Day river begins. You don't need to go to Montana to get the Big Sky... and you do not have the hub-bub of a sprawl like Bend. Ladies... Go race... you senses will love you and your lungs will love the clean air. I have ridden my mountain bikes all over the areas I have mentioned (as well as the Baker Valley) and never been let down by the places I have passed through. They have some great areas to do MTB races if they chose.

Ditto what Candi, Evan, and Allison say about Elkhorn. I've been endorsing this race to the women's peloton in Washington for a month (well, for years, actually), but what about you Oregonians? How many of the top 10 women in the Oregon Cup standings are signed up for Elkhorn (two, I think)? And where's the rest of the women's peloton that has so much depth in Oregon? This is such a fantastic race that I went to Baker City in 2005 even though I couldn't race. It's an OBRA event, not an NRC race, so you won't find all the pro teams that were at Mt. Hood. Even if you would not be racing in a womens field you should do this
race.
The scenery is gorgeous, the roads have very little traffic, and the
people of Baker City are fantastic.
If you are going, be sure to check out downtown Baker City. Barley
Brown's is a great local brewpub. Bella has a great selection of gourmet
foods and wine. And of course don't forget the Geiser Grand hotel. Take
the time to walk around and look at some beautiful old houses and
buildings, including the County Courthouse and the Carnegie Library.
Take a stroll or a ride down the path that meanders alongside the river.
Go check out the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center. There is so much more
to Baker City than you see from Interstate 84. And the beautiful thing
is that you can explore the entire downtown on foot.
I lived in Baker City for a year and it was a wonderful experience.
Nathan Hobson talked me into doing the race in 2004, with maybe 300
miles in my legs for the whole year. If I could survive all but the last
day with that kind of training, anyone on OBRAchat should be able to do
it. I don't really care how I do at the Elkhorn this year, it's just an
excuse to go back to Baker City for me. But I am looking forward to
seeing the top of Dooley Mountain this time around!

I have heard that the women's field for Elkhorn is very small this year,
so I want to encourage more women to try this race. It is one of my
favorite races of the season, so I personally want to see a women's
field in the future. Please consider doing this race. It has great
courses and is very well run.
