While riding up Thompson Road this morning I was pondering a large oil =

slick on the first major corner uphill from Miller Road next to the rock =

retaining wall. I assume that the oil slick and the e-mail about the crash =

are connected. There seems to be a lot of speculation as to how this =

happened so to fill in the blanks here are the circumstances as I see =

them.=20

1. The corner is off-camber and I believe the speed is posted at 20 mph. =

Most corners on Thompson are posted at 20 - 25 mph, some are as low as 15 =

mph.

2. There are alder trees and scotch broom growing into the roadway in the =

uphill traffic lane on this corner which forces a cyclist to move three to =

four feet out from the curb to get by them.

3. Most drivers, particularly sports cars do not drive the posted speed =

going uphill on this curve, or anywhere on Cornell and Thompson. I often =

see cars that are on the very edge of maintaining traction.

4. I have a hard time understanding how a car coming down the hill could =

almost hit a cyclist riding on the shoulder of the road going up the hill. =

Did the accident scare the cyclist into riding uphill on the wrong side of =

the road? May have been another cyclist on another occasion.

Rick is right, everyone should be careful, but he fails to mention that =

being careful means driving the posted speed. I've been dodging these =

trees for quite some time, the next thing I'm going to do is forward this =

to the City to cut back the trees.

I was going up the twisties next to where we live this afternoon, =

while going around a tight right-hand corner, came upon someone on a =

bicycle=20

that had wandered into the middle of my lane. The side of the road had a =

lot=20

of big bushes, and it looked like he popped out of one of these bushes =

in front of me.=20

To avoid him I swerved to the left and then to the right and went over =

curb on the opposite side of the street. (No, I didn't lift) On the =

other=20

side of the sidewalk was a wall made out of very large rocks. The car =

hit=20

these, climbed up the wall, and flipped. This happened so damn fast the =

thing I remember was hanging upside down looking at the deflated =

airbags.=20

Yeah, I'm fine with a bunch of little bruises. My passenger got smacked =

the face with the airbag, but didn't have a mark on him. Needless to =

say,=20

the TT is totaled. The guy on the bicycle stopped and called 911, then=20

split. Another car came along and said they almost hit the same guy =

coming=20

down the hill.=20

Considering I walked away okay says a lot for the body structure of the =

911.=20

The doors opened easily.=20

This guy owns a now wrecked Porsche 911 Turbo. He seems to place all =

blame on this cyclist that "popped" out in front of him. Never mind that =

he=20

was probably driving way too fast around a difficult to see curve -=20

especially considering the fact that his car which is known for it's=20

remarkable handling capabilities ended up inverted. Never mind that =

cyclist didn't necessarily "wander" into the middle of the lane ("HIS"=20

lane???). Basically this story is pissing me off - and all the replies =

to=20

it that smack talk the cyclist. So what I'm wondering is if an OBRA =

person=20

was the bicyclist of interest - and if they have a different account of =

the=20

incident. If so, send it on and I'll rant on the Porsche board.=20

I think the guy driving the Porsche was simply describing how the situation

appeared to him. His description of the cyclist being '...in my lane' is at

least as likely to be true as our assumption that Porsche was speeding.

We can only speculate on the drivers ability and etc. I would argue that our

focus should remain on the point the Porsche driver closed on:

Lets just make sure we don't break the rules (and laws) while we are riding.

We can't do much about what the other guys (in cars or on bikes) are doing.

I was going up the twisties next to where we live this afternoon, and

while going around a tight right-hand corner, came upon someone on a

bicycle

that had wandered into the middle of my lane. The side of the road had a

lot

of big bushes, and it looked like he popped out of one of these bushes

just

in front of me.

To avoid him I swerved to the left and then to the right and went over

the

curb on the opposite side of the street. (No, I didn't lift) On the other

side of the sidewalk was a wall made out of very large rocks. The car hit

these, climbed up the wall, and flipped. This happened so damn fast the

next

thing I remember was hanging upside down looking at the deflated airbags.

Yeah, I'm fine with a bunch of little bruises. My passenger got smacked

in

the face with the airbag, but didn't have a mark on him. Needless to say,

the TT is totaled. The guy on the bicycle stopped and called 911, then

split. Another car came along and said they almost hit the same guy

coming

down the hill.

Considering I walked away okay says a lot for the body structure of the

911.

The doors opened easily.

This guy owns a now wrecked Porsche 911 Turbo. He seems to place all the

blame on this cyclist that "popped" out in front of him. Never mind that

he

was probably driving way too fast around a difficult to see curve -

especially considering the fact that his car which is known for it's

remarkable handling capabilities ended up inverted. Never mind that the

cyclist didn't necessarily "wander" into the middle of the lane ("HIS"

lane???). Basically this story is pissing me off - and all the replies

to

it that smack talk the cyclist. So what I'm wondering is if an OBRA

person

was the bicyclist of interest - and if they have a different account of

the

incident. If so, send it on and I'll rant on the Porsche board.

As someone who rides up and down Thompson every day, many of the cars tend

to go close to if not over the line on corners. The problem with the autos

is that often they are greatly exceeding the speed limit when crossing over

the yellow line and consequently have no time to react properly. This is

particularly true with respect to the 911's, TT's, Ferrari's and other

similar auto's that use Thompson. I have witnessed a number of near

collisions with cars and bicycles and between cars ascending and descending

in opposite lanes on corners as well as a collision between a car and a

deer, primarily because the auto's are going to fast for the tight corners.

For the TT to do what it did, he had to be greatly exceeding a reasonable

rate of speed for the type of road. There is one TT that I see going up

Thompson regularly that would be an excellent candidate.
