A few months back, a test ride of a brand new $3,200 Trek Madone 5.2 ended
in a bike-auto accident. Luckily the rider was unhurt and the bike escaped
without a scratch, well except for the rear wheel becoming a pretzel and the
right rear dropout being cracked. Everything else on the bike was fine.
The Trek factory determined the frame to be irreparable, so after the
insurance payout to Sunnyside, the local insurance agency here in Bend did a
nice deed and donated the bike to our local nonprofit
bike/ped./transit/rideshare advocacy organization Commute Options of Central
Oregon (www.commuteoptions.org). I offered to put the parts on ebay for
them. However, before I do that I thought I'd offer OBRA people a chance
first. I'm not going to part out the build kit, but I will offer the carbon
fork and front wheel separate from the component group. This is a complete,
basically new kit to build a very nice bike, you just need to add the
missing parts:
a frame, pedals, all cables and housings, bar tape and a rear wheel.
If someone wants to donate a decent frame that will work with this group for
a good cause, I'd consider building it up and selling the complete bike for
Commute Options. The only real added costs will be for a cable set and rear
wheel. So let me know if anyone's interested since I believe, but I'm not
sure that any donations may also be tax deductible.
I know that I may be able to get 50% of what it's all worth on ebay, so I'm
hoping someone off this list will see the value in helping a good local
cause. I can probably arrange to get the items over to the State RR race
in Eugene for pick up to save on shipping. Otherwise, buyer will need to
cover shipping from Bend. I will have photos available (e-mail me) to
verify the condition of the parts. The parts are:
