My 2 cents....
I was involved in a near miss with Tri-met a few weeks ago. Amidst calls to
Tri-Met, the Portland Dept of Transportation etc, the main organization that
seems to be able to assemble incidents like these and make statistically
significant observations about rotten corners, unsafe biking areas and
dangerous intersections is the BTA.
If you don't feel too political about this, think of it this way, your
$25.00 membership can easily be recouped in the form of discounts at many of
the local bike shops. You end up paying nothing and do the biking community
a big huge service.

I would also recommend that every one who says something along the lines of
"we have the right to use the road" should also be a member of the Bicycle
Transportation Alliance, which is Oregon's state wide bicycle advocacy
organization. The BTA is a 501(c)(3), non-profit which spends time in the
legislature, on the local level and everywhere in-between advocating for all
bicycle users, Racers, commuters, recreational riders.
A basic membership is only $25 dollars for a whole year, which includes
discounts at local shops, as well as a monthly newsletter. Think about that
$25, for all of you who complained about one race costing that much.
The BTA also bring you Bridgepedal and the midsummer night's ride, as well
as a bunch of other swell smaller events.

So anyone who complains about drivers, should ask themselves, "What am I
doing to help?". There are many things you can do, and joining the BTA is
one of the best ones.
