Practice At Alpenrose

The policy is that the velodrome is open for riding on track bikes during
daylight hours as long as no other program is scheduled. Actually you
probably can get away with riding on a road bike (I would not suggest it)
but the Dairy staff will use the presence or absence of brakes as one of the
ways to figure out if you are "OK". Practically it is rare to run into the
Dairy staff while you are there. Mountain bikes and BMX bikes are
specifically NOT allowed. If there is no one there then there is, of
course, no supervision so you are responsible for judging if the surface is
OK to ride on (not wet, dirty, icy, etc.) and responsible for yourself
should you fall or get hurt.

The bottom line is that the security guard was wrong, you are allowed to use
the track on your own. I have spoken with the Dairy and they will be
correcting the security guard about the policy.

What is the policy for using the track when there is not an official event
occurring there?

I went to Alpenrose this past weekend to practice. The security guard,
Gregory, asked me to stop citing concerns over liability. I had a friendly
conversation with him as I packed to leave. He said he is confused whether
people are allowed to use the track when officials are not present. I don't
know either, so what is the policy?

Also, if we are not allowed to use the track on our own, what is the best
process for getting in some practice?

Thanks,
-Eric

Availability
The Alpenrose Velodrome is one of the few tracks without a lock and key.
Riders are allowed to come ride the track any day of the week as long it is
not during an organized track session. Monday through Friday evenings are
reserved for scheduled practice and race nights, the only other thing to
worry about are scheduled weekend events.

i beleive if there is a practice session going on, as long as you are
respecting the team practicing and generally working with them its not a
problem to be out there then as well.

Zac is completely correct. The track is open as long as it is daylight and
dry. There are reserved sessions that we have asked them to allow other
riders- AS LONG AS THE OTHER RIDERS DO THE SAME SESSION AS THE RESERVED
TEAM. Meaning no team pursuit practice during kilo starts etc. Be
particularly respectful during the kids classes Mon/Wed/Fri mornings.
I will ask the dairy to pass this message along to the guard who must be
new.
The one point I must point out is that we have had 2 riders fall while
riding by themselves. Both of them broke either a hip or femur and laid
there quite a long time until they were found. Make sure someone knows
where you are and have a cell phone and health insurance!!!
