Driving into your garage with your bike on top is a bad thing but not so bad
as the poor guy who accidentally drove over the top of someone else's set of
Corima track wheels and rollers as they were leaving the velodrome at the
conclusion of the Alpenrose Challenge last night. Ouch!

I got a roof rack because I'd been told they hold the bike more stable &
secure than trunk racks. I had a rear rack for an SUV before that fit
into the trailer hitch, and I like the roof rack on my Saturn better -
for one thing, it holds the bike securely by the fork, whereas I was
never able to keep two or more bikes from swaying and bumping into each
other on the hitch rack.
My system for keeping from running into the garage? When I have the
bike on top of the car, I swap the garage door opener over to the
passenger side so I have to reach over for it and that reminds me I've
got bikes on the rack. Not fancy (or as blatantly obvious as the "Got
Bikes?" sign - I like that one!), but I've avoided any problems so
far...

I made a system that lowers a sign as the door goes up asking "Got
Bikes?" It's saved me that embarrassing situation at least once for
sure. It's actually quite simple to set up if you have the right kind of
door (roll up) and can be done for less than $20. I'd be happy to
provide some instructions to anybody on this list who requests it.

On the other hand, some of us have learned to avoid doing that.
(some folks have been known to put a mirror on the cowl... I haven't
driven under anything with a bike on since I bought a car with a sun
roof.
There are arguments the other way as well... I used to own a bike
shop and during the summer, at least a couple of times a month
someone would bring in a bike that had been on a bumper rack... more
than once with a tire crisped by hot exhaust, many times with tires
scrubbed on pavement or driveways, then there was one poor guy who
came in with a bike that was literally flattened by backing into
something...
Safest place for a bike is, hands down, inside the car. So it's
inconvenient.

I have a roof rack and a hitch rack for different vehicles, both
Yakimas. For the car you describe, i'd go w/ a roof rack, since the
overall height isn't too great. A decent roof rack system will also
give you the ability to accessorize with other cargo/boat/ski options if
you so desire. I'm personally not a fan of most trunk styles I see
because the clip & strap arrangement seems like a hassle and I prefer a
little more clearance between bike and car to help avoid the inevitable
rogue pedal scrape. I think a rear hitch mount is better on a truck/SUV
where ground clearance is more generous for sloped driveways, etc, and
the roof height becomes too much of a reach.
