I got a roof rack because I'd been told they hold the bike more stable &
secure than trunk racks. I had a rear rack for an SUV before that fit
into the trailer hitch, and I like the roof rack on my Saturn better -
for one thing, it holds the bike securely by the fork, whereas I was
never able to keep two or more bikes from swaying and bumping into each
other on the hitch rack.
My system for keeping from running into the garage? When I have the
bike on top of the car, I swap the garage door opener over to the
passenger side so I have to reach over for it and that reminds me I've
got bikes on the rack. Not fancy (or as blatantly obvious as the "Got
Bikes?" sign - I like that one!), but I've avoided any problems so
far...

I made a system that lowers a sign as the door goes up asking "Got
Bikes?" It's saved me that embarrassing situation at least once for
sure. It's actually quite simple to set up if you have the right kind of
door (roll up) and can be done for less than $20. I'd be happy to
provide some instructions to anybody on this list who requests it.
