What a lot of talk ....
I think we all need to take a second and think about what we are saying and
if it is really worthy then stop talking and start acting. Sure attendance
might be down this year, and yes there are alot of reasons that are driving
that decline. It is like the trails we ride sometimes up sometimes down
.... I think we have heard all the major reasons, from someone in classes
not being defined right,, to courses not laid out just how you like to
someone Corvallis compaining about the drive to Portland being too long
.... whaahh I live in southern Oregon and the last three races I went to
were all 4+ hours away.
We need to look at why we are OBRA not NORBA, but at the same time we need
to take the good points that NORBA practices and apply them to our series.
If there is someone doing all the road race results then there should be
someone doing the same for the mountain side. Races that are going to be
apart of the Sobe series should meet certain minimum requirements such as
official results in with in two days of race, maybe require OBRA to do the
timing and must include times, fliers need to be to OBRA for mailing no
later than 1 month prior to event, mandatory upgrades for all classes, fair
breakdown of all classes for a points race... With consistancies like this
the racers will know ahead of time what to expect, and a happy racer is
probably the best promoter for getting new people into the race scene

Hi All -
Things I learned in the process of deleting 37 messages
1. Riders want more prize money for 1-2
2. Riders don't want to pay for entry fees.
3. Wisconsin has better turnout than Oregon
4. Wisconsin has more people than Oregon
5. Portland people don't like to travel to a race
5.5 Flat MtB. courses are known as "roadie" courses. (I'm not sure if I'm
offended or not. . .)
6. Everyone else's opion is not as good as mine.
Have fun riding!!

My own personal peeve with [mountain bike] races is they start so early
in
the morning. For example, every race in Bend starts at 10:00 AM so I
plan
on being there around 9:00. It's a 3:30 drive from my house, which
means
being on the road at 5:30 AM. It basically forces me to get a hotel the
night before. However, if I don't race, I could wake up at 7:00, have a
leisurely drive there, and ride for free.
One issue with race promotion is that the promoters fall into two camps:
help-the-sport and for-profit (or maybe lose-money and
work-for-pennies).
People don't know which is which, and expect prizes from help-the-sport
and
low cost from for-profit.
Lastly, I think the course design is a wash. Most people favor the type
of
course they do best on. Technical, flat, hilly, narrow, wide, fast,
slow,
mud, sand, circuits, big loops, 24 hour, whatever. It's kind of a bogus
argument, just like trying to decide whether Real Mountain biking is
downhill, XC, 24 hour, trail rides, trials, etc.
Mountain bike racing is still an evolving sport and we'll see it
continue to
change over the next few years.
race bike,
-Dion
