XC Racing Participation

Eliminating climbing all together is neither practical nor the idea
behind my earlier comments. Incorporating the climbing in a more varied
manner, offering more options for different levels of riders and at
different times of the season is.
We are discussing the future viability of the sport here. Some welcome
the challenge of extensive climbing and wish to see no changes at all.
For some of the events that will (and should be) the case as it is an
important element in the overall sport. But not the only element. I love
comments about climbing proving who the best rider is. If you're racing
only a handful of other riders - climbing or not - what have you proved?
We are defined by our competition.
In the face of declining participation I believe it behooves us to
consider different ways of doing things. How long will the current group
of promoters work for what amounts to minimum wage? Someday may wind up
with no races at all. And that result serves no one.

So how about a few races, perhaps early in the season when most people
are still building fitness, that are more beginner friendly? Start with
a few flat miles, throw in a series of shorter climbs in the middle and
finish with some downhill. The idea is not to crush people but encourage
them. Those that consider it "beneath them" to do such and "easy" course
don't have to participate. In fact if such individuals weren't there
"cherry picking" it could be considered a good thing.
I'll bet such a format would make it a lot easier to entice new
participants. It could be made a more family friendly, social event.
Consider throwing in some kids races. Team scoring is a great suggestion
to add an element of fun. Another idea is a poker run (at certain check
points around the course the riders draw from a deck of cards then play
their hands after the finish).

Point to point races have a place too. It would be great opportunity to
have some events finish with a net elevation loss. Climbing would still
be an element but the idea is to have more descending than climbing.
Sure, shuttling complicates the event but what if participation doubles
or triples? Would it be worth the trouble? I think so.

Folks, think outside the box. Travel expenses affecting participation?
Work with the local business community to get more practical prizes and
swag. Gas cards, restaurant or grocery store coupons are but some of the
things that would help more than another water bottle or some chain lube.
