Indeed. I will be moving to Charlotte, NC in the fall. While the work
there will be plentiful and life will be great in general, I too will
miss Candi and what OBRA means to the cycling community in Oregon; and
Portland's support of athletics in general. I don't particularly look
forward to racing in the Carolina's under USA Cycling.
That said, has anyone here raced in Charlotte?

Candi,
If no one has told you, then let me be the first: OBRA promoters and
racers owe you so much from your years of service here. OBRA events are
like
well oiled machines and come off with hardly a hiccup. And any hiccups
that
do occur are so minor as to be inconsequential.
On the other hand: A group of us from Vancouver raced the Wash Dist TTT
this weekend in Elma, WA. The weather was perfect with little to no wind
and
a starting temp of 61F. There was a slight problem: The course was
undergoing
major construction along three points within 1/2 mile of each other that
left
the road with soft gravel and sharp rocks on the course. This DID NOT
score a
great deal of points with the riders. The starters were also sending
riders
off before there slated start time. This led to last minute panic and
onfusion. As a final insult-to-injury, there was but one (1) set of
restrooms
to be shared among not only a couple of hundred racers, but also members
of the community who use the park area (Vance Creek Park in Elma, WA).
No
port-potties and NO TOILET PAPER!
All-in-all, it was not a very well run event. I am really surprised the
USACycling Head Referee allowed the event to go forward with the course
in
the condition it was in. But move forward it did. Our group came in 5th
in
the Masters C group, beating out some solid teams out of Seattle.
I often sweated bullets when I submitted paperwork for events to you.
Now I
am glad you forced me (and who knows how many others) to go back and
rethink/redo our race plans. By putting the safety of the racers first,
you
guaranteed that the participants would come back the following year.
