A Vancouver, Wash. man who hit and fatally injured a bicyclist with
his car and then drove off has been sentenced to seven years in prison.

Christopher Amick said in court Tuesday that he was "horribly sorry."
Amick struck Gareth Parker, 59, as Parker was pedaling south of
Oregon City in daylight shortly after 7 p.m. Sept. 5. Parker died
that evening.

Amick pleaded guilty in June to felony hit-and-run, criminally
negligent homicide and drunken driving. He also lost driving
privileges for eight years.

Police say Amick abandoned his pickup about three miles from the
crash scene. Prosecutors said he told police his car had been stolen
but later admitted to the crime. Oregon State Police learned that
Amick had been drinking in a Molalla bar and in Canby with a friend.

Parker was known as a cycling advocate and volunteer who during
cycling events passed out literature to educate drivers about safely
sharing the road.
