GEORGE SCHRECK

We do. We put on the TT in Peoria near Corvallis. One of the reasons
why we have it there is that it is a great course, and it is more
centrally located. It used to be in the Portland area, and aside from
the difficulties of haing it in a more congested area, it was too
difficult for everyone to get there.

I think given the importance of Championships, they should be in areas
where they are centrally located so we can get the broadest
participation. A two hour drive is reasonable for everyone. I realize
that it may make it more difficult for Portland promoters, but thye are
the Championships and they shuld be worth the effort. Peoria is a bit
of a strain for our team givne the location of the members (Vancouver,
Portland, Gresham), but I think it is worth (provided we can learn to
measure distances correctly). If the attendance is better as a result,
the additional entry fees somewhat make up for the extra effort.

Frankly, although I like the Crit course and the hill climb course, I
think it is a bit unfair to have the championship events there. I
would like to see Mary's Peak become the official hill climb venue and
see all the championship road races in the Eugene area. This year was
excellent as were all there road races in that area.

GEORGE SCHRECK

They must have changed it, becuase I was unfortunate enough to run the
old
West leg many years ago with a flash light as we were one of the last
teams off and it was getting dark. It was one of the worst running
experiences of my life, and became my last Hood to Coast. Since a
number of us hit the pavement that night, I suspect they decided to
move ot to the safer highway. Thanks for the explanation.

Regarding Hood to Coast, I "got" to run the first leg of HTC many
years ago.
They run on Timberline Highway, not West Leg. So it's not really that
odd
at all.

West Leg is closed due to logging. Logging operations were greatly
delayed
due to forest fire activity, and they will not be gone by the day of
the
race. I was told it wouldn't be a matter of sweeping the road in the
morning, but rather bulldozing it clear.

Alternative routes didn't work out, so we had to cancel. Plans and
communications are already underway for next year's event. Proper
time
makes a huge difference.

Thanks to the Ashland Hill Climb folks for making last minute
accommodations. Sounds like a great race, and you can even catch some
Shakespeare afterwards.

This is not about fairness, it is about choices.

People live in the Portland metro area and put up with congestion and
a higher cost of living because we like being close to things and not
spending our free time driving a long way to events. You made a
different choice which avoids some of the problems of living in
Portland and probably has some other compensations as well, but which
requires a lot of travel to events becuase you are not near a major
population center. As a result, your willingness to dive long
distances is not a good argument for my agreeing to do the same. I
have never considered moving to more remote areas just for that
reason. I and others who live in the Portland area made a decision to
live close to things and not drive. Just becuase you are willing to
hit youself over the head with a hammer over and over, does not mean I
should be amenable to doing it.

Events should be where the participants are. How many dates is Elton
John playing in Southern Oregon and how many games are the Blazers
paying in Medford? Oh that's right, none. Because their goal is to
maximize attendance, which should be OBRA's goal as well. Asking 80
percent of the Oregen racers to travel 10 hours and incur hotel costs
to benefit the 10 percent makes no sense. You will find that the
numbers will speak for themselves and the Championships will primarily
be a local event.

For those in the Portland area who disagree, I suggest you prove me
wrong and show up. In fact, I will pay $5 of the entry fee for anyone
who lives north of the I-205 and I-5 interchange, who participates in
the road hill climb as a racer. How can I make this offer? Volume, or
in this case the expected lack thereof. Come on, prove me wrong and
take my money. I expect to be there taking names. Also, for anyone in
the Portland area who shows and is 50+, I will pay one half of your
entry fee and if you beat me, your entire fee (even Dave Zimbleman
despite his being a Cat 1, as I do not descriminate against 1,2's in
age races). Let the excuses for not attending begin.

I do like Southen Oregon and the racers that live there, so it is not
a knock on them. This is just a common sense comment that you put the
events where they are most accessable to the bulk of the
participants. It argues that you do not put it at Mt. Hood either.

drive up
there for a race? Let's see a little support here. These promoter's
work
very hard to make these races fly. I know it's a ways to drive believe

but it will be worth it. It's only 8 hours round trip. Bring a good

Watch a Play? Race the roadie up the hill, have your spouse drop a Mt Bike
at the top of the hill and ride Alice back to Lithia park. Stop in at
Brothers for a late breakfast and head back home. I recommend the Houeveos
con Chorizo. Yummy!

When you get the post Ride Munchies, stop off at Rice hill on the way home
for a big ass ice cream cone. Umpqua Ice Cream of Course, the best in
Oregon.

Have to keep the kids happy, take them to Wild Life Safari. Nothing the
beats watching an ostrich eat the bugs off your windshield.

Sounds like whining to me.

George, I am sure you work hard doing your part to make racing in Oregon
great.

Richard Hogan is a great guy. I've met him and ridden with him, ( Yo!
Richard) The race he is putting on would happen weather you want collect a
state championship medal or not. And I bet the attendance would be
comparable to the numbers at Mt Hood, just filled out with the local
Southern O folks.

Although I don't disagree with your statistics, I think you need an attitude
check about it. People in Lakeview, or Medford, or even Baker city, or are
Oregonians too. Let them Host a championship once in a while, and maybe you
can make a drive. Just like they do.

There is NOTHING WRONG with having the state champ race move around to
different venues each year. If you are really into this scene, you just
make the trip happen. It is in Ashland, and if I was going to race, I would
just go and race.
If you want to cry.... cry all the way to Ashland then race.

Regarding Hood to Coast, I "got" to run the first leg of HTC many years ago.
They run on Timberline Highway, not West Leg. So it's not really that odd
at all.

West Leg is closed due to logging. Logging operations were greatly delayed
due to forest fire activity, and they will not be gone by the day of the
race. I was told it wouldn't be a matter of sweeping the road in the
morning, but rather bulldozing it clear.

Alternative routes didn't work out, so we had to cancel. Plans and
communications are already underway for next year's event. Proper time
makes a huge difference.

Thanks to the Ashland Hill Climb folks for making last minute
accommodations. Sounds like a great race, and you can even catch some
Shakespeare afterwards.

Maybe they figured we were "bikers," and had visions of
cigarette-smoking motorcyclists racing their Hurley-Davisonz up the old
(dry) forested road? THAT would be a fire hazard...

Could we get some clarification on this race? I've not participated in this before so I am not familar with the format. I'm assuming it's a race format (mass start) vs. TT?

Given the feedback I've seen so far, perhaps 1 solution would be a later start time to give racers from Portland the time to make the trip down if they are coming down that day.

Having promoted a race before I understand you can't please everyone.

Numbers on the Right
Finish elevation is over 6,500 feet and temperatures can be quite chilly at
the top. We will have a vehicle to shuttle your warm clothing to the top.

yes, but most of the racers live in the I-5 cdorridor north of Eugene,
and principally in the Portland metro area. Why should we hold races
where few live. The races should be held where they are accessable top
most of the people. If people in Southern Oregon drive a lot, it
reflects the fact that while they live in a beautiful area, there are
fewer number racers.

Actually, I think the championships for road events are best held in
the Eugene/Corvallis area, as they are within two hours for most
people, except those in Baker City and Hood River. That way we get the
widest selection of participants.

Why not? Us Southern Oregonians all travel to the Portland area round
trip many times for races throughout the year. Would you rather see the
Championships not happen at all? Candi is right about OBRA not being
about Portland, but about the entire State. The original venue was to
be at Mt. Hood. That would have been well over a 10 hour round trip for
us down here, but many of still would have made the drive. The Portland
crowd should make the trip down for this race. The venue is truly
awesome and the race promises to be a great one... As long as your not
afraid of a little climbing.

I remember driving from Ashland up to Mt. Hood for the championships
2 years ago. And that was what? A very frigid 26 minute race. Mt. Ashland
is a very scenic 1.5 hours. By far the funnest race on my calendar.

This year, I'll probably drive up from the SF area. So maybe
we should call it the Southern Oregon and Northern California
championships! ;-)

Though I am not going to Ashland for the hill climb I drive to Portland
about 7 times a year to cyclocross. I never complain as that is what I do.
Oregon is a big state and if you want to be champion of a big state you will
have to drive, if not try Rhode Island.
