In this picture I believe that the riders are, in order, Jerry Powell, Dave
Rhodus and Randy Shafer. It should be noted that they are wearing the
Madison jerseys that I made that are still in use.

The first time I saw Alpenrose in '76 it had weeds growing through the
cracks, weird transitions into what I thought were impossibly steep turns
and I thought it was not really a track at all but perhaps an abandoned
reservoir!

It appears these photos were from a Thursday night race in 1984. I recognize
the red/white/blue jerseys from a team I was on that year. I think they are
riding a Madison, and they would have been using seat slings, not the hand
slings we now use.

The rider in blue (with white Brancale helmet) just leaving the rail is a
very young Darrol Batke-before he won the US Madison Championships.

One of the reasons the attendance was so low is that Mike and Candi had not
started to help Oregon racing. Another reason is that the faster riders
were all away at Natz.

Darrell's comments about the south turn water hazard are right on. Anyone
remember racing the track right after Mt. St. Helens blew. I have pictures
somewhere of riders going down the home straight with a 'roster tail' of ash
coming off the back wheel. It made match sprints very exciting when the
riders tried to go slowly around the banking.

Aahhh. The good ole days, when you had to bring your own broom to sweep the
horse s##t from the track before you could ride; not to mention the
ever-present holes and loose concrete patches. Some of the pictures show the
continuous leaking of treatment pond water from the south side of the track.
It was slimy and smelly and slick, and I was there the day that Phil Sanders
was riding and slipped and crashed in the slimy mess. I think that was the
last time he ever rode the track. The corners were also off-camber above the
blue line (before the corners were reconstructed in 1997). Watching the guys
from Seattle come down and get airborne in the turns was always great fun.

Nice picture of a very young (and fast) Jerry Powell in pic 027 (black
jersey). The guy in orange jersey was/is the owner of Basset Press? Name?
