Hello everyone,
For the motorcycle crowd, my dad has a Fieldsheer rainsuit that he no longer
is using. Its basically brand new, he only used it a few times. It is a
large in size and
the pants are black and the jacket is black, with some red & gray. All the
seams are
rain proof and sealed and the jacket has a zipper and velcro closure on it.
Let me know if anybody is interested......offline. Price? make an offer.
Thanks,
Jeff Tedder

As a racer, I've had the following questions go through my head while
racing:
1.) Is the road open at 200M across both lanes?
2.) Where is the break?
3.) Where is the field? (I usually wonder about #2 much more often.)
4.) Where's the wheel car?
5.) What did the official just say because the wind is blowing at 30
mph in my ears?
6.) Did Candi just say there would be cattle on the road on the next
lap?
If you've ever wondered this stuff, or had other questions, wouldn't it
be nice to simply be able to ask for clarification without losing your
spot in the field to drop back and ask? If you drop back to ask, would
you happily share your info with the group after fighting to get back
on?
In a field of 15 riders, one might be able to easily execute this
maneuver.
In a field of 80 Cat 3s, it's a little more difficult.
I would like to propose we allow riders to use a two-way radio with one
ear piece/mic while racing, regardless of the field.
Riders could tune to the OBRA race freq to monitor chatter and ask
questions of the officials.
If desired, they could tune to another freq if they need to talk to
their team car to get the team doc to adjust their chamois butter, or
whatever. "Personal" use would not be prohibited on other frequencies,
only on the OBRA freq of 3-15.
As long as one ear is "un wired", and no "team" or "misc" race chatter
happens over the OBRA race freq, this could be a valuable tool to
communicate issues/changes to the riders.
There is currently no rule addressing the use of radios in the OBRA rule
book that I could find.
Should it be allowed?
If so, the only reason it even needs to be in the rules is to stipulate
that only one ear piece may be used.
Ok, let's hear it...

Radios are extremely expensive, but if you can put together the financing
for all the teams and the non-affiliated riders that don't have a pro-tour
team budget then I'll support it. Also, make sure the Veloshop radios are
available in pink and black, otherwise it will clash and offend our strict
sartorial sense.
Thank-you.

Jim,
Though I agree some official communication with the group could be
valuable in some situations (the Omnium womens race comes to mind) in
practice the average rider might not be ready for the responsibility.
Even with the most professional radio discipline there will be times
when radio communication will come at a bad time. A simple startled
reaction or a moments interrupted concentration could snowball into a
major problem.
And then there's the issue of increasing the cost of equipment another
notch. That should be considered as well.

i see no problem allowing radios. if teams have them, and dont plug both
ears,
whats the harm? as long as riders understand it doesnt guarantee
communication
but may only ease it if conditions are right, then why not? it could be
useful
between teammates, and i doubt it's going to cause an arms race. besides, we
spend $100 on a pair of race tires, a couple little two way radios is
practically a bargain for bike racers.

racing with race radios is not all it is cracked up to be. we used very
high quality radios in Europe last spring and they are almost more hassle
than
they are worth. they obscure your hearing, are hard to talk through and
half
the time you hear static. Even the top level pro's have issue's with
their's. todd and I spent many days trying different mic's and way's to cut
out the
road noise and it was almost impossible. When you are actually "racing"
and
not rolling along talking, they are almost useless as it is really
dangerous
to take your hands off the bars and fumble around your collar trying to
press the little mic button and talk.
keep it simple....

when this came up before, one of the issues was differentiating between
a team radio for communications and a racer with an ipod. Several people
suggested racers with ipods are dangerous.

Just a heads up that this is to be the final
installment of the Alpenrose Wednesday night track
class. Come on out and learn to ride the track. $5
for the class, $5 if you need to rent a bike. Bring
your own pedals, shoes, helmet, and willingness to
turn left.
Class starts at 6pm. Bike rentals/paper work starts
around 5:30. Runs until dark.

No solutions from me, just suggestions:
These radios are bound to be a point of contention between affiliated riders
and non-affiliated riders. To even the playing field, and to solve the
initial dilemma of having bettered communication from the race officials,
maybe OBRA could buy (or bill us by increasing membership fees) several sets
of 'neutral' radios to be handed out to riders selected by lottery at each
race. These riders would be expected to relay info to the other riders in
the peloton. As you can imagine, though, that could get very sticky.
If these radios were team-specific, many teams would be unable to purchase
them, and it would make them tools for bettering TACTICS, not relaying
conditions on the course. In itself, that is fine, but because we are not
an organization that requires every rider to be on a team, I see it as
problematic. Are these radios for domestique work/Bruyneel orders or
keeping the field safe? Imitating the pros is a great way to appreciate the
sport at its limits, but many amateur riders may not be skilled enough to
handle such a responsibility like a pro can.
But I wouldn't mind wearing a radio, personally. Even if it did add ~700
grams extra weight.
Especially if it was pink/black.

Since I've been driven around to so many races this year by all of you I
thought I would give something back to the community and offer housing to
anyone who wants it during the Eugene celebration stage race. There is a
lot of floor space so bring a sleeping bag and pad. I live only a short
ride away from each of the stages. Give me a call if you plan on stopping
by.

Your wheel had your name on them so I brought them home from High Desert. I

I am an offical and a racer. How could I expect riders to be able to handle
having a radio when us riders can barely ride a straight line? It would be
a liability for OBRA to support it. If you didn't hear what the follow car
said to you, waive it up. Ask other riders if you think you missed out on
info that might be important. Just one more factor to put in crashes. I
could see only the 1/2 field doing it. I would consider it an earned
right. Otherwise, keep your eyes and ears open for the important info. Oh,
here are my answers...
1.) Is the road open at 200M across both lanes?
-you should ask this BEFORE the race if the official forgets...
2.) Where is the break?
-were you at the front to watch? Why did you let it go?
3.) Where is the field? (I usually wonder about #2 much more often.)
-if you got dropped, oops, that's racing
4.) Where's the wheel car?
-put your hand up, it will show up, I promise : )
5.) What did the official just say because the wind is blowing at 30
mph in my ears?
-waive up the the follow car
6.) Did Candi just say there would be cattle on the road on the next
lap?
-maybe, it's happened before!

How about just a sign at the 200m mark (or whatever seems to make sense)
saying "200m 1 [or 2] lanes"? Surely everyone would know it pertained to the
end of the race only. If there can be signs for the distances, why not one
with this important info, too ? If the pack needs to check, well, the sign
is there.

HIGH DESERT
I'm sure I can speak for both my brother(Tim) and I in saying thank you to
all
of this years omnium racers, volunteers, fans, officials, and most
especially
the medical folks. We can certainly look back at the weekend and say that it
was a success. It was only with the contributions from each person involved
that we were able to have this fun, exciting, and sometimes scary event. The
response that we were hearing was very positive and that is what will
motivate
us to host this race again next year.
This being our second year with the event, it is safe to say that
improvements
had been made since last year and we look forward to making next year even
better. One last thank you to our sponsors for helping reward our racers for
their efforts...Bend Bike N Sport, Therapeutic Associates, Deschutes
Brewery,
Strictly Organic Coffee, and the Taco Stand.
We are glad to hear that everyone is doing well that was involved in the
crashes
and we look forward to seeing all of you back in central Oregon for the 2007
High Desert Omnium.
SKULL HOLLOW
The issue with skull hollow is simply a matter of timing. It is not
something
that was said or done, it just isn't working out for this year.

Actually, it was my English Bulldog, Horace. He managed to get access
to my computer without my knopwledge. He also puchased a number of dog
toys on line using my credit card. As a resutl, I am revoking his
television privileges. He will have to miss this year's edition of the
Westminister Dog Show.

I just received a telephone call from George Schreck, he has informed
me
that he has been out of town the last 3 days or so and his son "George
Jr" has been sending out e mails on OBRA Chat "claiming" to be George
Sr.
The reason he "called" me as oppose to e mail me is because his
computer
has "crashed" because of all the nasty grams he has received re: his
"alleged" comments re: the location of the Hill Climb.
George wanted me to tell you all how sorry he is about this
"misunderstanding"
and he totally appreciates Richard for taking on the OBRA Hill Climb
on
such short notice. Plus, George is very much looking forward to the
drive down to BEAUTIFUL Southern Oregon. He also wants to know if
anyone
wants to car pool? It would be a plus if you like to sing show tunes,
George loves to sing show tunes while driving.
So PLEASE disregard any further e mails from "George Schreck"
pertaining
to the location of the Hill Climb [because it's probably his son
"George
Jr"] no matter how convincing the e mail is...... :-)

Well either way, we all new it was not you, the George we know would know
better, I mean they held the world championship mt. bike race in New
Zealand. I do not think there were any locals in that race, most had to
travel to the opposite side of the earth. JHK broke a chain right away and
was done, what a waste of time!

Aahhh. The good ole days, when you had to bring your own broom to sweep the
horse s##t from the track before you could ride; not to mention the
ever-present holes and loose concrete patches. Some of the pictures show the
continuous leaking of treatment pond water from the south side of the track.
It was slimy and smelly and slick, and I was there the day that Phil Sanders
was riding and slipped and crashed in the slimy mess. I think that was the
last time he ever rode the track. The corners were also off-camber above the
blue line (before the corners were reconstructed in 1997). Watching the guys
from Seattle come down and get airborne in the turns was always great fun.
Nice picture of a very young (and fast) Jerry Powell in pic 027 (black
jersey). The guy in orange jersey was/is the owner of Basset Press? Name?
Thanks for sharing Mike.

I'm sure you could just get a radio and listen to OBRA race radio but I'm
afraid you would get little useful information and lots of noise and
chatter. In addition every few seconds or minutes you would hear a loud:
"BLILILILILILILILIL" I have no idea what that means but it happens a lot on
OBRA radio.
Just go pro and you can have your own race director not only tell you where
the break is but also use you like a video game character.
Who cares were the wheel car is? If you get a fast wheel change from neutral
support you are very fortunate.

Duncan, Are you insane? That is a 30 round clip of problems on full auto!

It appears these photos were from a Thursday night race in 1984. I recognize
the red/white/blue jerseys from a team I was on that year. I think they are
riding a Madison, and they would have been using seat slings, not the hand
slings we now use.
The rider in blue (with white Brancale helmet) just leaving the rail is a
very young Darrol Batke-before he won the US Madison Championships.
One of the reasons the attendance was so low is that Mike and Candi had not
started to help Oregon racing. Another reason is that the faster riders
were all away at Natz.
Darrell's comments about the south turn water hazard are right on. Anyone
remember racing the track right after Mt. St. Helens blew. I have pictures
somewhere of riders going down the home straight with a 'roster tail' of ash
coming off the back wheel. It made match sprints very exciting when the
riders tried to go slowly around the banking.

For those who are bothered by the bumpy and crumbling surface at the
Alpenrose Velodrome I just got some pictures from the distant past showing
what it used to look like. They also show the level of participation too.
