FW: 2007 Races

Hear, Hear! promoting is, at best, a tough, sometimes thankless task as it is. All of my concern goes to Richard, what an unfortunate deal.

If the debt follows anyone, it must be the promoter, as it is the
prpomoter that is a legal entity, not the race.

That said, I think Richard does a very good job promoting races, and I
think we would be ill served to prevent Richard from promoting races.

As for the amount owed, it is only prize money, and I cannot imagine
that anyone actually comes to these races because of the prize money.
Given the investment in the sport by a racer, the prize money is a
pittance. Frankly, if you are in this sport for prize money, you need
your head examined, given the cost/benefit ratio. Between the cost of
the bike, clothes, other equipment, travel cost and the time spend
training and racing, it would make more sense to use the time spent
training on a minimum wage job. A prize of $25 to $100 for an
occasional win hardly balances the equation. Amateur racing should be
directed at the fun of competing. We have professional jobs that give
us money.

Amateur bicycle racing is odd with its focus on prize money. In any
other sport, the reward is a medal and the satisfaction of winning.
Money is not even an option.

I think we should let it go. Richard got burned by the sponsor and as
a result a few people will not get some prize money. I am sure they
are still able to eat and still are continuing to compete in other
races whether there is prize money or not.

Candi,
I think the debt follows the promoter, any organization must have a
"the
buck stops here person".
Squables with sponsors, vendors, paricipants etc. It all falls on the
promoter.
Race venue or name has nothing to do with a particular event.
It sure would be a shame to ban a promoter but I would surely hope
something
could be worked out thru arbitration, outside of this forum...

Candi,

With all due respect, can we table this until there is a meeting of the OBRA
Board of Directors? This seems like an issue that would be best discussed
in that venue. Not here in public (where the noose is readily available).

Jess,

I'm a member of the Paul's Cycling Club and a teammate of Richard's.

But this is not a time for NIMBY's... this is a deadly serious issue that
could very legitimately affect a good portion of bicycle racing in Oregon.
Racing is THE reason we join OBRA and this is the time when we must come
together to provide communal solutions to communal problems. We all depend
on promoters to race whatever race we decide to enter. Richard is involved
in an enormous amount of those races. He has worked tirelessly to promote
races all year long (including the state championship) for a net loss.

He organizes races because we need races. I certainly don't have the will or
talent or time to dedicate hundreds if not thousands of hours in work for
other people to enjoy a race or two. Do you not want the opportunity to race
the Cherry Pie, or the WVC or one of the 8 or 9 time trials Richard
promotes???, because we are on the verge of letting the by-rules overwhelm
the purpose of our little community. A sponsor shirks his responsibilities
and suddenly we decide to hang the core movers out to dry.

Nice (bleeding sarcasm)! Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your
face.

It's time to step up to the plate with help and ideas, not ask 'what have
you done for me lately'.

Sorry if I sound angry... but I am.

Alec-
with all due respect to your constructive ideas and problem solving..I would
have to disagree that financially
"punishing" the hundreds, if not thousands, of riders who never even
considered attempting the WVC race this year,
through increased annual memberships, to be a fairly bad and inherently
unfair idea.

If all of the above fail add a surcharge to OBRA 2007 membership and / or
race entry fees to pay the monies owed.

As a Eugene based rider and small time event promoter I totally support Jim
Fischer's point of view.

Richard is one of a limited number of OBRA members who is willing to give
his time and energy plus take the harassing that goes with promoting cycle
racing events in Oregon. Without members like Richard there will be no
events.

OBRA and its members should provide Richard with their full support.

A few suggestions:

Have one of OBRA's friendly negotiators / attorneys approach the sponsors on
Richard's behalf to see if they can facilitate getting them to honor their
commitments.

Seek a new OBRA sponsor or existing OBRA sponsors and use their generous
donations to pay the prize monies owed.

If the above fails have OBRA not Richard approach the riders who are owed
prize monies and request that they forfeit their winnings or accept some
other items / privileges in exchange as partial payment. Perhaps free entry
to any OBRA event in 2007.

If all of the above fail add a surcharge to OBRA 2007 membership and / or
race entry fees to pay the monies owed.

Well.. now I MUST fess up regarding my prior post:
Each event has issues that result in things going right or wrong. Perhpas the
best way to handle this is on an indivual basis and get the facts from all
sides before making a judegment (unlike what I just did... mea culpa...)

It seems to me that the responsibility of pay out/promotion is that of the
promoter/club. It is not the 'race`s' fault that payment was not made to the
riders. If the promoter is having problems meeting their responsibility, then
the riders can punish the promoter by not attending any event the promoter
puts on. And not necessarily the event itself.

Just my $0.02...

Fischer, Jim E (Corvallis)

Now the cat is out of the bag. I just saw Candi's post apologizing for
airing this publicly. Personally, I think this is a topic perfect for
the OBRA family to discuss. Richard did nothing wrong except believe he
was going to receive funds which never were delivered.

If Richard is required to come up with the WVC cash purse money on his
own, it will most likely send him packing. Imagine you put on a huge
race, spent months preparing and were told by your sponsors that they
would give you $5k or $10k which you will use to pay straight through to
your winners. You advertise this fact and provide them with their
expected exposure. Spots on the website, banners hung at the venues,
space on all promotional materials etc. You followed through on your
commitment to them. Now they need to give you your cash so you can
reward the racers who came from who knows where to compete in your stage
race.

If I had won, I would have a hard time accepting a few hundred bucks
from a guy who busted his ass to revive a great event, went seriously
into debt doing it, and who was covering for a large company which
reneged on it's responsibility to Richard and to the racers who were to
receive the cash awards.

Easy for me to say, right, since I didn't win anything?

I was the chief judge. There were three or four of us judging the
event. We stayed up until 2 am each night processing results. One of
us was up all night the last night trying to get ready for the final
results posting. I slept in my van the night before the race and
commuted back and forth to Corvallis the other days. I'm still finding
gel in my car seats where an injured rider sat for an hour before his
team mate borrowed my car to run him to the hospital.

I asked Richard to cover my gas. One official came from Portland and
his expenses and time were covered. The rest of us volunteered,
donating our time...just like Richard.

So, if we hold his feet to the flame, he'll be banned from putting on
events, or he'll have to pay thousands. Realistically, there will be no
more Eugene events put on by SweetSports, at least not for a while.

If we write it off as an unfortunate turn of events, then the winners
are not rewarded for their placing. This may hurt the credibility of
the promoter, OBRA and racing in Oregon as viewed by those from other
states.

Or, what if the racers contact the sponsors directly and ask that they
make good on their commitment to Richard? After all, he will turn
around and cut the checks to the folks who earned the cash. He will be
back in good standing with OBRA and with the racers. Hell, he might
even decide it's worth all this hassle to keep promoting events!

My two cents...

I'll send this off-line.

I know a few riders who never got their money at WVC who I am sure would
not mind to release WVC of any prize money they are owed. Maybe that
could be a 'charitable' solution?

This maybe the a daydream solution. Just a thought.

that you would be able to recover some of the lost sponsorship and/or
repay
some of the outstanding bills with the money you made from the road
champs.
But it looks like that has not been done.
The OBRA rules, if we enforced them pretty much forbid you for putting
on
another event until your financial responsibilities are taken care of.

I would hate to impact any Eugene area events, as I
feel we need to keep major events like Cherry Pie and
WVC. They are both well attended.

Mike taking over the WVC is news to me, but then again
I am more in the Mt Bike world then road.

I do not want to make this personal, I think OBRA must
do what they must, but I would hate to see these
events go away.

We are trying really hard to make our area a mecca for
bike events and these two events are a cornerstone to
making that happen, as is Mt Bike Oregon on the Mt
Bike side.

Just my 2 cents

Thanks

As we start to plan the 2007 season. We need to come to a conclusion on what
to do about the outstanding bills that the Willamette Valley Classic still
owes.
I have been contacted by many riders who have not been paid their prize
money. I have asked Richard to come up with a number. Please read out notes
from the bottom up

According to the OBRA rules this would incur a suspension under
15.1- Failing to meet a financial obligation to OBRA or an entity associated
with OBRA. The suspension will last until the debt is made good.

Richard puts on a weekly time trial/hill climb series and has just taken
over the production of the Cherry Pie race. According to my sources, the WVC
will be attempted again by Mike Ripley.

So do debts follow the race or the race organizer, or both?
Do we shoot ourselves in the foot by banning him from putting on events that
greatly impact the development of riders in a location other than Portland?

I'm still waiting on a decision on the sponsor $$, they are back to not
responding to me again. I sent another certified letter on Monday after I
got back from vacation.

As to events I thought about doing next year, the Hill Climb & Norman asked
me to do the Cherry Pie for him for a year since he retires in February 07.

Other than that I wasn't planning to do anything else.

I could use some of the proceeds from the CP to pay off some debt from WVC.
Most local riders (Eugene based locals) have been taken care of with trades
into other races like the rehearsal & state & shop credit. I sent some
jersey's to several other riders in exchange for $$ owed. About the only
people I owe know are the top 5 riders in the P1/2 & 3 men, most of the
other classes were not big enough to get a full or partial payout.

If that does not work then I won't promote anything, after dealing with Lane
County all summer and the Eugene Police this past week at the local Crit I
really am not interested in wasting my time figuring out how to make it work
anymore. The only reason I agreed to do the CP is it is in Linn County and
to help Norman out for a year. The Hill Climbs are a loosing $$ deal
anywase, it's more for personal gain and a chance to do a weekly series.
