7 medals at Masters Track Worlds - Day 2
Day two at the UCI World Masters Track Cycling Championships saw Americans
grab three more world titles, three silvers, and a bronze. There were seven
new World Masters Best Times set on Tuesday, and two of them were set by
Americans.
Team USA sits in second in the medal count with 16 medals. Great Britain
currently holds the number one spot with 19.
After posting the second fastest qualification time, Stephen Hill rode to
the first American medal of the day - a bronze in the men's 40-44 sprint.
Shigekazu Maruyama of Japan set a new masters best time of 11.284 in the
third round en route to his world title, and Wikus Esterhuizen of South
Africa earned the silver medal. Americans Wil Zegers, Matthew Diefenbach,
and Roger Hernandez placed fourth, fifth, and sixth respectively.
Alphonso Whaley successfully defended his 2005 world title in the men's
45-49 sprint to claim his second world title in as many days. In the 200
meter sprint qualification, Whaley not only posted the fastest time, but
added to his accomplishments by setting a new world masters best time of
11.183. The Silver medal went to Geoff Stoker (AUS), and Steve Pulford (GBR)
took the bronze.
In the men's 60-64 sprint, American Gregg Stanley placed sixth. After
posting the fourth fastest time of 12.687 in the 200 meter qualification
round, Stanley advanced to the semifinals where he lost to Australian Goldie
Michael who eventually earned the silver medal in the finals behind new
world champion Geoff Cooke (GBR). Graziano Pantosti (ITA) rounded out the
podium in third.
Delroy Walters continued the American success stories by claiming gold in
the men's 70+ sprint and by setting a new world masters best time of 13.536
in the semi final round.
Walters placed second in the 200 meter qualification round, while fellow
American Keith Harrison posted the fastest time in hopes of defending his
2005 sprint title. As both men advanced to the finals however, it was
Walters who took the top honor. Harrison secured the silver medal, and Great
Britain's Derek Thurrell won the bronze.
As women's competition took center stage in the afternoon, Elizabeth Reap
rode to yet another rainbow jersey for the U.S. with her time of 36.997 in
the women's 30-39 500 meter time trial. Michelle King (AUS) and Sian
Richardson (GBR) won silver and bronze.
Annette Hanson claimed her second silver medal in the women's 40-49 time
trial. She posted a 39.269 over the 500 meters to finish second to winner
Janet Birkmyre (GBR). Emi Wachi of Japan claimed the bronze.
In the women's 50+ time trial, Team USA won another silver medal,
compliments of Donna Smith and her time of 40.657. Great Britain's Joanne
Fenwick became the new world champion, and Ann Staley also of Great Britain
won the bronze. Another American performance of note came from Louella
Holter who placed fifth with a time of 44.605.
In the event's 12th year - a record entry of 426 riders from 25 countries
are competing for over 50 World Championship titles this week. The UCI World
Masters Track Cycling Championships will continue Wednesday with the sprint,
points race, and pursuit competition.
