It also makes me wonder how many people here have lived other places. I've
lived/ridden in Memphis, DC, Boston, Monterey, the Bay Area and Portland (and
visited many others). It is worlds better here than anywhere I have spent
time as far as car/bike relations go. Increased bike density may mean that
incidents get more publicity among riders, but on a per-rider basis I would bet
anyone that problems are less frequent here. Sure beats bouncing off bus
mirrors on Mass Ave. in Boston.

Portland is supposed to be the most bike friendly city. Now I learn it's the
most dog friendly city too. Isn't that ironic? Dogs & bikes.

Oh please. We all use different methodologies to try and exert some
measure of control over our environments. Rick and Jessica are just
using the methods that they find effective. Besides, it is often the
squeaky wheel that gets the lube first.
There seems to be room for us all to use the methods we find most
effective as long as it doesn't actually endanger someone else.

I had a similar incident happen to me this morning by a school bus on
Clackamas River Road. (Not the turning left incident, but the buzzing
incident) I noted the bus number, time of day & school district & called to
file a complaint. The transportation manager did talk to me at length &
assured me that this driver would be spoken to & that they were definitely
trying to set a good community example. I think that if each & everyone of

Here's a letter I just sent about a driver who endangered me on my
bicycle; I'll be interested to see if I get a reply.

To Whom It May Concern:

I just had a disturbing interaction with one of your employees. I was
making a left turn on my bicycle from SW Broadway, by PSU, and was (as
required by both Oregon law and common sense) in the left-hand lane,
signaling my turn. Your driver tailgated me, then swerved aggressively
around me while honking his horn.

Does your company encourage employees to drive in this rude and
dangerous manner? Should I also expect American Heating Inc. drivers to
honk at old ladies who take too long to cross the street, or try to run
down small children who have the nerve to be walking to school?

Perhaps you are not aware that more and more Portlanders are riding
bicycles every year, and these bicyclists are your current and
potential customers. In fact, last year the number of bicyclists in
Portland increased by 20%, and this trend will continue into the
future.

I will certainly make a point not to ever use your services, and I've
let a local bicycling list-serve with thousands of members know that
your company is not a good or safe community partner.

I would like a reply about what action you will be taking with the
driver in question (license plate 879 CHS). I will be happy to post
your reply to the same bicycling list.
