This will undoubtedly offend many, though it is not meant to.

On a pedestrian-advocacy list serve, I once read the suggestion that
auto crashes and pedestrian/auto crashes would be a thing of the past if
every automobile had a 6-inch spike sticking out from the center of the
steering wheel. Now that might encourage some cautious driving!

coming, and I know I'm not bullet proof.
I would expect somebody driving a car to have the same common sense,
especially with their 3 kids in the car with them.
If she is making a desperate attempt to cover the truth by saying the
sun
was in her eyes, she knows the truth inside. And, unfortunately for
her,
she is the one who has to live with that whatever it is.
My deepest condolences to the rider's family.
This kind of thing makes me angry. An accident is an accident. Sure.
But
there are not very many accidents that are not avoidable.

You don't necessarily have to pull over. How about slowing down or exercising some precaution? Or, hey! Here's a thought. How about pulling over when it is safe (by looking over your shoulder to make sure it is clear) and using your damn turn signal to let the rest of know what you are about to do.
I'd be willing to bet that this woman did not do that (use precaution). You can't tell me that if she (or anybody else driving) approached this intersection with the thought that there is a chance that something unexpected might happen this guy would probably still be alive.
Maybe my expectations are too high of the dull-witted car drivers of the world....?
Do you drive when you can't see?
Wow! I hope I don't find myself near you (in my car or on my bike).
Accidents do happen. You're right about that.
But they happen alot more to people who do not use precaution.

The way the story goes is the rider was coming at her and he is saying if you can't see what's in front of you don't go there, it's not rocket science and accidents like this should never happen, but unfortunately they do, because people don't want to take time out of there BUSY schedule to slow down and take the time to make sure where there going and what's in front of them. It's all sad no matter how many ways we look at it. But people have to take some responsibility for there actions at some point and pay the piper. An accident is accident but running over a cyclist is not even in that category in my mind, especially head on when you should see them coming,
and not blaming the sun.

Don't forget that dirty windows significantly increase glare - even at
relatively high sun angles. It may or may not have anything to do with
this incident.
Now that the sun is lower in the sky at busy times of the day it might
be a good idea to consider when was the last time you cleaned yours
(inside and out).

In the subject of rider visibility, it's long been a practice for
motorcyclists that the rider keep the following two points uppermost in
mind at all times:

* You are are invisible.
* Expect the unexpected under all circumstances.

Wendy (and all)- I have read all these posts, about all of these
recent accidents, with sadness. I have nothing to add to alleviate
the darkness that they spread. I cannot say anything that will bring
light to these horrible events. I do not wish to incite anymore
heartache, sadness, or anger over this particular tragic event. I
must, however, say something in response to your email. Let's not
spread more heartache then we already have to deal with.
In my humble opinion the particular creed of the driver in question
and her level of religious devotion has very little to do with the
question of her culpability in this accident. I recognize you may
only wish to communicate your endorsement of this lady as a
responsible and virtuous person. I am certain you mean only the best,
but you may want to keep in mind that your comments leave a different
impression on the people who do not necessarily equate a particular
religious devotion with absolute moral rectitude and unqualified
responsibility.
Please keep in mind that not everyone regards "good Christian
women" as being significantly different from "suburban mothers" in
regard to their driving abilities or their regard for other people.
Mostly people are just people, and their faith. or lack thereof, has
very little to do with the mistakes they make. I send this with
respect to you and for you. I do think I understand your point of
view and your desire to say to the bike community that you know the
driver in question to be a good person. I would only suggest that
you think of it, or at least say it, in different terms. Our hearts
go out to everyone involved in this accident and their loved ones, no
matter where, or if, or to whom they pray.

Christian woman, mother of four who is so devoted to her family that she
retired from her job at Intel and is home schooling her children. She
and her husband ride motorcycles and she herself was hit about 18 months
ago by a car that did not see her. I am convinced that this was NOT a
suburban mother, talking on her cell phone and driving recklesslessly. I
believe this was a horrible accident. It could have been any one of us.
I am in shock as I write this. Please consider my point of view.

Dept.
THey told me they don't have a report filed yet, so they had no

intersection of West Union and Helvetia is very open and visible from

If the rider was heading east, and the driver west, then she missed her
turn. There is a turn lane that sends traffic to Shute Rd. I could surmise
although I am likely wrong that she had missed the turn lane. Didn't see the
biker, and turned into him.

If he knew the road then he would not have anticipated a car turning across
the east bound lane.

Cars do not see cyclists at that crossing. East bound traffic on West Union
is obscured by the A Pillar of most cars. (I tested this myself.) I ride
there nearly every time I get on my bike. I've been tagged once, and have
lost count of the close calls. If a car is even close, I assume they can't
see me.

I've heard a rumor that the inter section o\is going to be converted to a
round-about.

Can't happen soon enough.

Apparently 6:00 PM. The sun is low at the time there, but not blindingly
so.The majority of accidents at that intersection can be attributed to speed
and/or inattention. I can't say for sure but it appears the driver made left
onto Shute without stopping or yielding (obviously).
