My wife just picked up a NiteRider MiNewt which I got last night. It's pretty bright for such a small light. It's under $200 and seems to work great.

I use the Cateye HLEL500's. As John has recommended, I mount 2 on a spacebar each one boresighted to light up a different section of road up ahead.
These little guys throw enough light to actually illuminate dry pavement at night up to about 30-40' ahead.

At less than 50' each, you can afford to mount FOUR. Two on a spacebar and I've seen commuters mount additional ones on their bike fork legs.

A lot depends on what type of roads and riding you are planning on using
it for. HIDs the cat's meow for raw power, light up everything, and
commanding respect, but well out of your $200 price range, so you're
back to Halogen or LED.

The new higher powered LED lights are worth a look. The nice thing
about the LEDs is that they have a much whiter light than Halogen
(similar to HID), which does wonders in the being seen category. When
the vast majority of other lights you're looking at in traffic are
running halogen, it's nice to have that whiter colored light to stand
out. I commute with a friend who runs a 5W Dinotte LED light. I meet
up with him at an intersection where I can see a good half mile down the
road. If I get there early, I can see his light coming that full
distance distinctly separated from the car lights that all blend
together. He also runs a Light and Motion HID some days, and from a
distance for more than say a 100 yards, I can't really tell the
difference.

The LEDs perform fairly well in the city where you've got a lot of
ambient light already and your primary goal is to be seen, but they lack
the sheer power out on dark country roads especially when it's wet and
you've got oncoming car lights and glare.

Since halogen is "older" technology, I'm sure there are some deals to be
had, though I haven't really paid much attention to halogens lately.
Dollar for dollar, if I had to choose a light for riding out on dark
country roads, I'd chose a halogen (15 watt minimum). I think you get
more power per dollar, maybe at the cost of run time.

In the city I'd pick an LED, 3 watt minimum, but more is better. The
cateye double shot and triple shot are really nice, but pretty spendy.

In the end, I wouldn't trade my HID for anything. Sure, I get drivers
flashing their brights at me out in the country, but at least I know
they see me. I'm still amazed at how often drivers pulling out from
cross streets in city traffic will wait until I pass when I'm running a
HID even though they could have pulled out 3 times over with room to
spare. No way would they do that with a halogen. It's almost as if
they can't figure out what is coming at them so they just wait.

Also, I wouldn't say that NiMH batteries are much of a "step up" over
NiCad. Sure, they'll give you a lot more capacity for the same weight,
but in my experience, they're pretty suspect in terms of durability.
I've got two 8 year old NiCad batteries from an older Halogen system
that still work fine, and I've got a drawer full of NiMH batteries (at
least 5) from much newer systems that have all taken a crap with
probably less than a quarter of the use that I got out of my old NiCad
system. Also, NiMH batteries don't hold charge, so if you're using
your light infrequently you have to make sure to charge it before every
use. I've had similar problems with NiMH rechargeable AAs for my
digital camera.

I'd probably still pick a NiMH over a NiCad just for run time, but I
don't believe all the marketing hype about how great NiMH batteries are.
In actual use, they just haven't held up for me.

No you don't need one of those.
My experience on the NiteRider Smart Evolution is that it's as bright as the HID lights for 1/2 the cost and NiteRider's well thoughtout connectors and usability are supperior to at least the Light & Motion stuff I tried.

I'm all about seeing obsticles and being seen.

Anyhoo. According to my limited experience, there are bike lights that are good for seeing the road, and some that are only good for announcing your existence to cars.

I had one of those CatEye LEDs that had, like six or eight bulbs in it. Brilliant. Very bright. When I rode through Ladd's Addition, cars in Vancouver could see me. But ironically, it didn't do much to illuminate the various potholes and other road debris.

Do I need one of those giant bottle-sized batteries and an incandescent (not LED) bulb?

Or should I perhaps just eat more carrots?

Time to bust out the light system.

I am looking to replace my old Nite Rider NiCad headlight/tailight.

I have been very frustrated with this system over the years with it's
inaccurate charge indicator
and stinky NiCad battery with its short run time.

I am ready to step up to the world of NmH batteries.

Any recommendations?
