funeral, part II

If it were my funeral, I would want you guys to use it for awareness.

But I would prefer the suits to the bike gear.

I ride the elevator at work in my bike gear and all the guys in their $300 Mens Wearhouse suits don't even look at me. Ride with the same people while wearing my dress clothes and I get much more acknowledgment.

I think it would be great if it made the news AND all the riders
attending wore work clothes. I get the feeling that the non-cycling
public believes we're some sub-species that disappears into a hole when
we're not riding. Seeing people they identify with gathered to honor one
of their own might make a powerful impression and hopefully improve the
odds against yet another tragedy.

Whoa whoa whoa. Not what I meant. I meant my comments only in the most
respectful and supportive way. Perhaps I should have said "jerseys". A
means only to identify that we are cyclists there to support. Another post
mentions helmets only - that seems appropriate.

PLEASE DO NOT START A FLAME WAR OVER THIS. My idea was only to be
supportive and show respect and nothing else. Jerseys are over the top.
Point taken. Let's move on. If you still have issues with it, please have
the decency to flame me off-list.

I'm thinking of going to show support for the family. I vote for team
jerseys with black slacks. I could understand not wanting a large number of
guys in spandex at a memorial service. Evan - are you willing to organize
if enough people go? I see there's a bbstanley on the linked forum who's
planning on riding as well.

I can't think of a better way to show support than to see a bunch of

I agree. Much like thousands of firefighters showing up to honor one of
their own. It would be nice to have an 'honor guard' of riders to follow
the hearse. The more the better.

Of course, I'd rather we didn't have to have the funeral in the first place.

True. If we go in team kit, we'll probably make the news. It would be nice
to have a designated spokesperson to speak articulately on our behalf and
present a good image to the media. No agenda, no politics. Just
articulate that we are there to show support for the family and friends of
one of our own, and let that be enough.

I mean, if we go BY BIKE, should we wear nice clothes or our team gear?

I can't think of a better way to show support than to see a bunch of
bicycles in front of the church....or 1,000 bicycles following a hearse
down the road.

Of course, I'd rather we didn't have to have the funeral in the first
place.
