Well done Geri.
I got hit head on by a car when I was 13 yrs old, and spent a long time in the
hospital, body cast etc. It isn't something you will easily forget. However,
it made me really pay attention to cars when I ride. Now my son is racing, and
when we ride together I always mention something about safety, rules of the
road, and how to call out dangers like when we ride in team pacelines.
I think that there is some safety in numbers when we are on the road. Many of
the accidents take place where there is only one rider out there. If you have a
few riders, they can take up a bigger patch of road, and are also easier to see.
I know that I feel safest when we have our team in two pacelines. We still get
buzzed sometimes, however I think the drivers are less aggressive since they
know this is a "group of people" that might do something about it.
There are the bonehead drivers that just will endanger others unnecessarily by
being careless, as well as the intentional jerks who try to hurt cyclists.
Even though we see what we think are many of these types of drivers, I think
they are a small percentage of drivers. It is like airline crashes versus
number of flights. The drivers that worry me are the ones that are not paying
attention and just don't see us riders. We can't make them change their driving
habits, so we need to do anything and everything to help them see us.

Along the same subject (dangerous drivers), we as cyclists need to follow
the rules of the road. Today in Bend, I wintnessed a cyclist in a Team Kit
running through a couple stop signs and running a red light. Actions like
that unfortunately make us all look bad. It seems that we all need to step
up and ride as responsibly as possible, to not add fuel to the fire.

That's a great idea. You should have a place for recording vehicle types and plate numbers and names (if we find them) as well as locations. The "Red Truck Guy" in Portland is a good example for this. This way we can warn others of some of the DUANES' out there.

Glad to hear you didn't go down Dave. There are some real dicks (or in this case DUANE's) out there! At least he won't be hard for the Sheriff to find. Reading your email reminded me of getting hit by that semi truck last June... The guy looked right at me and pulled out anyway as well... Afterward while my bike was laying crushed under his wheel and while I was bleeding, we were all waiting for the police and paramedics to show, the guy stood around with his buddy laughing about the whole thing! He even called up his boss on his cell phone and said "You won't believe it, a guy on a bike just ran into me!"

With all the recent news lately, it doesn't seem to me that this really has much to do with the fact that it was a sports car. The news lately has been filled with SUV drivers, pick-ups pulling boats, logging trucks, minivans, young drivers, people distracted by the sun glare, nice neighbors, etc... with the only commonality being risky behavior.
